When you see a new 'number', it's because there's a new protagonist. If you see spin-off titles between numbers (eg: Brotherhood and Revelations) that means those are continuations of the current protagonist.Brotherhood is meant to be just that. Brotherhood. Ubisoft never claimed it to be Assassin's Creed 3.Same thing with Revelations.
