mshotpink100 Says:
May 9, 2012 - wow. you guys that think this song is about claiming land and somehow its a bad song. You obioulsy dont know anything about the hisory behind it. Its talking about how U.S. citizens have a "god given right to have america span from sea to shining sea" this was one of the main points of why the U.S. allowed Texas to be annexed into the USA. If Texas and CA, the last two parts of the U.S. needed in the 1850's to complete the U.S. into what it is today, the "manifest destiny"
nilradem Says:
May 10, 2012 - I don't think Guthrie would agree with your interpretation - Guthrie was a socialist and his argument is not about manifest destiny, but a critique of claims to property and the immorality of the wealthy elite making claim to the land and other property. It is about each person having a right to share in wealth, as IronPaul wrote below. I also think those who argue about Native peoples and immigration are somewhat missing the point.
ahhAhahahaahhah Says:
May 10, 2012 - Has no idea what the song is about - tells everyone they have no idea what the song is about. Classic YouTube kids.
Bloodr3ad Says:
May 10, 2012 - Anyone know where to find the version with the excluded versus about the sign that says private property and the shadow of the steeple?
Bloodr3ad Says:
May 10, 2012 - "In the squares of the city, In the shadow of a steeple; By the relief office, I'd seen my people. As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking, Is this land made for you and me?"
jpwarzinski Says:
May 14, 2012 - .......... SAID YOU WILL NOT TAG JOSEPH FURWA'S BODY IN THE FIELD OF LODZINA, POLAND. YOU WILL NOT SHOW IMAGES ON POLITICAL SIGNS. YOU WILL NOT SHOW THE PLATFORM .JUST ASK ANY BISHOP. JOSEPH PATRICK WARZINSKI CEO JOANNA VLAURUS FOUNDATION, WHITE, PA., USA
HostileAngel Says:
May 15, 2012 - :O the last verses are cut out!! It was also a political statement of the period... here's the rest:As I was walkin' - I saw a sign thereAnd that sign said - no tress passin'But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin! Now that side was made for you and me!~In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steepleNear the relief office - I see my peopleAnd some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'If this land's still made for you and me.
Skilledatlistening57 Says:
May 17, 2012 - How does it have a communist political message?
DevoTillDawn Says:
May 18, 2012 - The belief that no man has a greater right to life than any other. That no matter your station in life you have a responsibility to your fellow man because we are all apart of one whole, the Earth, the land, and this country called America. Call is communist. Call it human. Woody had it right.
manco82 Says:
May 19, 2012 - Woody was a Communist!
MrThorben291 Says:
May 19, 2012 - this song is 52 years older than me and the oldest interpretation i know:)thumps up if your around 15 listen to this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mobilechief Says:
May 20, 2012 - Thank U!!!!!
bamapagedesign Says:
May 21, 2012 - He was a socialist. McCarthy labeled him a communist.
Pennilee1 Says:
May 23, 2012 - No; I don't think so. Just because it says it's your land/my land doesn't mean it's automatically a communistic message. I'd say it's more of a socialist kind, but definitely not communism. And really, I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing-- this is our land, no? ;)
Friedstuffsable Says:
May 24, 2012 - "Bob Dylan" A.K.A. Robert Zimmerman, ripped off Guthrie harder than the Monkeys ripped off the Beatles.Real talk.
Friedstuffsable Says:
May 24, 2012 - You don't know that Guthrie is a socialist?Begin life over, & pay more attention this time.
Pennilee1 Says:
May 24, 2012 - Naw, I know he's one; just not a communist though.
swiftmachine1515 Says:
May 24, 2012 - eeeeehhhhh idk. every system has its drawbacks, I guess. Maybe then, people are won over from emotional arguments.... but whatever, great song nonetheless. x)
patpenn07 Says:
May 26, 2012 - To all those saying Woody Guthrie was a communist get into your thick skulls that he was a social libertarian/anarchist. Communist? what because he gave a fuck about people? I know what a communist is because i am one, so all the ignorant ones commenting on this i actually feel sorry for you
nilradem Says:
May 26, 2012 - He was a member of the communist party as a young man, but did leave the party. He remained a socialist, though, in terms of economics, while favoring aspects of anarchism. Certainly never libertarian as that term is most often used today (and yes, I know you are using it differently.)
furtadogerry Says:
May 27, 2012 - Great Song!!!!!

chosito11 Says:
May 9, 2012 - this land was made for me not you!
