Jan 28, 2012 - It was not always like that. The church had been promoting science and logic for the whole Medieval period and it was a great patron of the arts for much of the Renaissance (I am not implying that it did not persecute heresy with cruelty) The real problem at the time was the difficult position of the Church vs the ever growing extend of the Reformation (see my comentary above). They saw themselves as needing to show a strong stand on matters of faith & authority.

elarrebat Says:

Jan 28, 2012 - Reality Check. Martin Luther believed that Copernico's ideas about the sun revolving arroung the Earth to be pure nonsense. He wrote about it and condemed them as heresy.

Mistermax30 Says:

Jan 29, 2012 - Science and logic had actually been suppressed for the entire Medieval period. Scientific writings only began to trickle back to Europe toward the end of the Medieval period, when crusaders brought back scientific and historical documents from the Middle East. Christianity by nature is a literalist faith which takes any other modality of thought as a direct affront to the authority of "god". Unfortunately, this way of thinking persists to this day...

Jan 29, 2012 - Well, I hope he didn't roast anyone for it.

StevenDrakmage Says:

Feb 16, 2012 - yeah . I have heard that there was only arrogant and genius Vatican ignore the earth revolved around the sun too.Nonsense, I can make up 1000 lies about Vatican, but where is the proof?

lduych Says:

Feb 23, 2012 - Faith is the pinnacle of arrogance, rooted in the cowardice of denying one's ignorance when confronted by mystery.Faith is the deadliness of all vices, a kind of brain death elevated to the status of virtue, and worse even than war; because with faith there can be no reasoning, no negotiating, no compromise, no peace."Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."~ Albert Einstein

LiqnLag Says:

Mar 6, 2012 - The episode of NOVA, Galileo's Battle for the Heavens (can currently be seen on PBS' site) is very much worth watching for a more in depth view of Galileo's circumstances, complimenting this episode of Empires very well. Suffice to say though, Galileo wasn't merely a broken old man in his exile at home. With his remarkable daughter's support, he went on expanding the boundaries of the science he had effectively given birth to.Amazing series though, thank you for all your uploads to Youtube

Mar 24, 2012 - Hey look, no evidence! The only straw man here is saying it was about personal politics and denying the facts. This is absurd fantasy by an apologist and a slave.

SuperGreatSphinx Says:

Apr 12, 2012 - Why can you only comment on this vid, but not the others???

Vierotchka Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - You confuse faith and belief. Faith is of the heart, belief is of the ego.

Vierotchka Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - Faith to a Christian or to a Mohammedan or to a Hindu is nothing but another word for belief, and a belief is never anything but a repressed doubt. Every belief has behind it a doubt. To repress the doubt you believe more and more ... but the doubt goes deeper and deeper into your unconscious.

Vierotchka Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - Faith in the world of Gautam Buddha's experience is not belief. It has nothing to do with doctrines and philosophies, theologies, ideologies. It has something to do with trust, something to do with love, something to do with being at ease with the world, however it is.

lduych Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - "Faith in the world of Gautam Buddha's experience is not belief."If "the world of Gautam Buddha's experience is not belief," then "the world of Gautam Buddha's experience" cannot involve faith. Your reply has nothing to do with my comment

Vierotchka Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - I guess the simple-minded cannot grasp what I wrote.

lduych Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - I understand exactly what you wrote, but do you?In your response to my comment, you indicated that your 'faith' involves 'experience', rather than 'belief'. But all faith involves belief, by definition. Therefore, whatever it is you are talking about, it isn't faith. You have much to share, I am sure, so it is important to use words which say exactly what you mean, and 'faith' is not one of them.

lduych Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - Religion is never about freedom.Religion is always about obedience.Religion is a mind's cage devoid of all laughter.

lduych Says:

Apr 27, 2012 - The Church may have indeed known the truth and yet persisted to save face long enough to figure out what to do.But please, do not blame Galileo's personality for the horrific crimes the Catholic Church perpetrated against the poor man. To do so is to spit upon all the burnt corpuses the Catholic Church has provided us with.

KINGUIDAWAY Says:

May 2, 2012 - These episodes were worth watching! I have learned so much. Ah, the taste of knowledge and art! This was most edifying indeed. It's sad that the Catholic Church was a constant thorn at the side of artists and people who wanted to increase in learning.
