Added: Dec 30, 2009
Author: NationalGeographic
Duration: 3:39
Description:
Giant salamanders, some growing up to 5-feet in length, face a barrier of dams in Japan, built to control flooding. Now it's hoped a new system will help these giant amphibians get upstream past the dams to lay their eggs.

Dec 2, 2011 - Yes, they have.

Dec 2, 2011 - they're not evil, or hateful. They're effing wild. Predators don't like being effed with, ever. If you grab anything that eats other animals, it'll probably bite you. Just common sense-which is sadly in danger of extinction.
toranamunter Says:
Dec 2, 2011 - they must be thwarted. I don't hear any hippy whinging about T Rex being extinct.

Jan 24, 2012 - What the dicks are you even talking about? No animal needs to be "thwarted" or deliberately killed off by people, especially not these things. What the hell makes you think they're so "evil and hateful" anyway? Lemme guess, the fact that they're not cute and fuzzy?

May 28, 2012 - It's a different (and slightly larger) species of giant salamander that's eaten in China; they even have farms in China that breed them, since there aren't enough wild ones to supply the demand for them. The frustrating thing for non-Chinese amphibian breeders like me is that while the Chinese are munching away at them, it's illegal for people like myself to breed them to supply to zoos etc, where they wouldn't be eaten and could contribute to the preservation of the species.
pinklulu22 Says:
May 28, 2012 - Oh my Lord !,I believe these animals should be protected, How can they eat these poor animals? , Can you find a away to breed them? I mean like creating some kind of shelter also for their protection?
Peter5930 Says:
May 28, 2012 - Eating endangered species is a status symbol in China, and nothing seals a business deal quite like treating a prospective client to a meal containing shark fin, giant salamander or tiger penis.Unfortunately, there's very strict legislation, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which prevents giant salamanders from being legally moved across international borders. Conservation of giant salamanders is almost entirely up to the Japanese and Chinese due to CITES.
