Title: RIKKI DON'T LOSE THAT NUMBER (1974) by Steely Dan
Added: Nov 5, 2009
Author: wilsonmcphert
Duration: 4:15
Description:
'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' was off Pretzel Logic, and appears to be a favourite of Steely Dan fans. It was released in 1974, and had several musicians outside the band helping out. Michael Omartian plays keyboard, Dean Parks acoustic guitar, Jim Gordon drums, Victor Feldman percussion, and Timothy Schmit on backing vocals. I have done a slideshow video featuring most of these guest musos, as well as the usual Dan suspects, Donald Fagen, Walter Becker and Jeff Baxter (Denny Dias was not on the track). I tried to include images of Steely Dan and Donald Fagen album covers. I also obtained an add on to Windows Movie Maker, which gives a few more panning and zoom options. This is the first video using those. Comments are invited.

Apr 30, 2012 - Michael McDonald also sang a lot of back up for them. Sounds like he was in on this one too.

May 3, 2012 - 1974-Palmer and Dias gone by now.Read an interview with Palmer saying it was a coup de tat starting in 1973.Fagen had a more assertive personality and with Walter Becker took the band over.He was even having session guitarists play instead of Baxter by now and is why Skunk left to join the Doobies. He sounded very bitter even after all these years.

May 5, 2012 - I don't feel the need to cap on anyone... I hear the "Dan" and I just thank GOD for giving me the ears to hear... the heart to feel and the soul to rejoice in the magic that these fine musicians gifted the world with... there are no words... there simply are no words... so I'll let them say it for me... in every note and the spaces in between... all I have is profound gratitude... I found the words... two of them... THANK YOU!

May 6, 2012 - Timothy B. Schmit was in POCO at the time of this recording, not yet of THE EAGLES until 1977. Great posting, though.

May 12, 2012 - I was told that this song was a tongue in cheek open letter to Rick Derringer to join the band, and it sure sounds like Rick on guitar here to me-maybe somebody can clear that up for me?

May 17, 2012 - Good tune. I still say the best songs written came from the 70's and 80's.

May 28, 2012 - I agree, i think back to the 70 and 80 when i grew up and actually greive for those days again. Life was fun. There was no worrying about ragheads blowing people up, everyone was involved in sport, cars and family. every family in the neighborhood consider each other their family. Good people good time and good clean fun. I weep for the future now.

May 28, 2012 - The original version has Feldman's flopanda as a solo intro- it can be heard in the background of this version around 0:06-07,0:10-11 and 0:12-13, and whenever the intro vamp comes around. From what I've read, the flopanda is a type of electric marimba, originally commissioned by John Lewis of MJQ fame, and aka 'Lujon' and supposedly used prominently on Henry Mancini famous tune of the same name.

Apr 24, 2012 - An actual artist will help define a generation like Lennon,Dylan, maybe a Cobain,Joplin,Joni Mitchell,Morrison to name a few. These people reflect the society like an author and contributes to the world. Today you have Beyonce, rap, and Bieber which dont stand for anything important, political, nor historical. In the end they have no contribution other than cheap entertainment and errosion of the arts! 99% of the stuff made today has NO reason to exist on the radio or in our lives. A sad fact
