May 22, 2012 - So then by this logic Jaco Pastorius is not worthy of any acclaim or appreciation. After all, he was just a part of the popular band Weather Report and played with the popular artist Joni Mitchell...
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 22, 2012 - Have a listen to "Planet Caravan" by Black Sabbath, "No Quarter" by Led Zeppelin, or "A Day" by *gasp* Styx. Some nice, tasty jazz going on in there. So I guess anyone can play jazz after all. And have a listen to Entwistle's bass line on "The Real Me". Far from being just pentatonic scales, it makes extensive use of chromatics. And the song is in C minor, not a "pentatonic key".
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 22, 2012 - And when rock musicians go beyond "pentatonic patterns" (as they very often do) then they get called "pretentious". Just ask Rush, Dream Theater, Kansas, Yes, or any progressive rock band. Or any technically proficient player like Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai.

May 22, 2012 - Overrated
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 23, 2012 - So is jazz!
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 24, 2012 - Maybe John could have played jazz and just chose not to. Ever think of that?
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 24, 2012 - And by this standard, Jaco Pastorius was no good. He was non compos mentis in the years before he died-living on the streets-and couldn't make a living flipping burgers, much less playing bass.
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 24, 2012 - Hell, even SPINAL TAP played jazz!
flibbism Says:
May 25, 2012 - technically proficient that take no risk in what they do.........Vai and Yngwie...dime a dozen shreddersjust brought the talent first....
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 25, 2012 - "Technically proficient that take no risk in what they do" is code for "not jazz", right? I would say that anyone who tries to make a career as a musician in any genre is willing to take risks!

May 26, 2012 - No, Hendrix was the Hendrix of guitar and Entwistle was the Entwistle of bass. Two peerless, incomparable legends of their own instruments.

May 26, 2012 - i love jazz... as you know rock exists due to jazz and blues...my proficient comment was only to the non risk taking " style " of these shredders... not their profession to take the risk to become one...i just do not think they push the envelope anymore...and keep to what is safe...
chidhumetal1993 Says:
May 27, 2012 - why not jimmy page instead of vai? :D just my opinion!
MrJed50 Says:
May 27, 2012 - he was the best "rock" bass player.....Jazz is a different type of music....seems like you know a little music theory....let's hear your top bass player....and BTW I think Stanley Clarke is the best Jazz and Fusion player of all time...but you can't compare the two.....it is all in the type of music you like.....Also....Clarke was a big fan of Entwistle's....
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 27, 2012 - Personal preference of mine, nothing more. I am a huge Led Zep fan too!
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 27, 2012 - That has been my point all along. Completely different genres and styles-comparing Entwistle or Geddy Lee (rock) to Pastorius and Clarke (jazz/fusion) or Flea and Stu Hamm (slap/funk) is comparing apples and oranges and bananas. What pisses me off is when someone says that a bassist of a given genre is a crappy bassist only because they personally don't like the genre of music that that particular bassist plays.
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 27, 2012 - Believe it or not, I love jazz too (and I am a bassist if anyone hasn't guessed that by now). In my CD collection I've got Jaco Pastorius (solo, Weather Report, and with Joni Mitchell) and Clarke (solo and with Return To Forever). Love them both, and Jaco was yet another case of an incredible musical talent that was taken from us far too soon. I love classical music too. But my first love is and always will be rock.
CygnusX1Timbo Says:
May 27, 2012 - P.S. And in almost 30 years of being a bassist, it has been my experience that jazz enthusiasts are the ones most guilty of that offense.
jloch85 Says:
May 27, 2012 - A "Bassist of the Millennium" distinction should go to a proficient bassist who makes a living playing bass, not being the bass player of a famous rock group. Session players like Nathan East, Steve Bailey, Will Lee, Leland Sklar and others would be more deserving of it. They make money off their skills, not because they rode the coattails of Pete Townshend. My taste in music has nothing to do with my opinion on Entwistle btw, it's just session playing is infinitely more difficult than rock.
MrJed50 Says:
May 27, 2012 - I agree that sessions players have to be talented....but it is also not comparable to being onstage performing live, when there are no retakes or editing or overdubbing....you can't compare the two...and BTW if you know your music theory, improvisation skills are based upon pentatonic scales amongst other things....so what is your point...almost all musicians use that knowledge...I really don't see what point you are trying to make. Everyone has an opinion and no one is exactly right.

May 22, 2012 - So if a bassist is only good if he can play in "any setting" then I guess Jaco Pastorius was no good because he could only play jazz...
