Apr 26, 2012 - Surely they have figures of speech and expressions in Germany? Maybe I'm not on to the big joke, or he is very a good actor. But is he really not comprehending the fact that, yes while seemingly bizarre, there is a social, cultural, and etymological context in which these expressions have significance?

Apr 27, 2012 - they do have stupid idioms. to have unrealistic ideas is to have 'big raisins in your head'. but still, our idioms are pretty damn crazy sometimes.

randomplanetful Says:

May 12, 2012 - Perhaps you have not been to Germany, but the German people are a very literal one. Sarcasm and figures of speech do not have many places in the German language, as the figures of speech they do have make much more literal sense than those which we have in English. For example, a common idiom is "mir es scheiß egal," meaning literally "to me is shit no matter" but means "I don't give a damn." There are a multitude of other idioms, just not ones as abstract as "the proof is in the pudding."

soundtribejunkie Says:

May 13, 2012 - mmmmmmmm....ZE German

Sumibraxis Says:

May 13, 2012 - 'proof' is also another word for 'evidence' mate. the literal idiom you experienced was only partially correct. its not "the proof is in the pudding" its "the proof is in the PUTTING" in other words, when playing basket ball, you; "You are one lucky, tiny, bastard." your mate "The proof is in the putting". he is telling you that the evidence of skill is NOT in words, but through action. the proof is in the putting said ball into basket...

ShrikeX4 Says:

Iwein720 Says:

May 15, 2012 - Actually, the original phrase is "The proof of the pudding is in the tasting." In other words, the proof of the quality of the pudding is when you taste it. Wiki it! :p
