Apr 2, 2012 - You'd be surprised. I started paying attention to how my friends and I speak and I caught it a few times.
Celynn126 Says:
Apr 12, 2012 - Incorrect. Most Canadians pronounce their 'ou' words with an 'oa' sound. So about becomes "aboat" and out becomes "oat." Americans here that and stretch it to "aboot" because they hear that elongated vowel. It's a trait disappearing among younger Canadians because they're indoctrinated with U.S. media but it was a national thing at one point. Well, except in Alberta. They were settled predominantly by American immigrants.
Celynn126 Says:
Apr 12, 2012 - I don't think I get your comparisons? We're small and unnoticed? We do it because we find it humorous. Americans aren't expected to see it and we don't care if they do. You guys make fun of us and we make fun of you. It's a gentle ribbing that has been going back and forth between us for many years.
PeriodicBrilliance Says:
May 7, 2012 - Yup. I was down in New Orleans last year, and the minute I said "about" (I'm from BC, so no Newfie accent) everyone goes "Oh, well if you'd said that earlier I would have KNOWN you were Canadian. You say it funny."
