May 24, 2012 - They're similar in the sense that they have the voiceover narration, but I feel the profoundness of their words is far more earned in The Thin Red Line based on the things we see them experience. It's a movie that takes itself seriously and earns every inch of it. I think The Tree of Life on the other hand is a self-indulgent mess that fails its ultimate purpose because every scene is treated with the same tone from Malick. For a movie that's about life, it's very one-note to me.
