Description:
It's quarter to three, there's no one in the placeExcept you and meSo set 'em' up joe, I got a little story you autta knowWe're drinking my friend, to the endOf a brief episodeMake it one for my babyAnd one more for the roadI know the routine, put another nickelIn the machineI'm feelin so bad, I hope they make the musicdreamy and sadI could tell you a lot, but it's notIn a gentleman's codeMake it one for my babyAnd one more for the roadYou'd never know it, but buddy i'm a kind of poetAnd i've got a lot of things i'd like to sayAnd if i'm gloomy, please listen to meTill it's talked awayWell that's how it goes, and joe i know your gettin'Anxious to closeThanks for the cheerI hope you didn't mindMy bending your earBut this torch that i found, it's gotta be drownedOr it's gonna explodeMake it one for my babyAnd one more for the roadWriten by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen.Originally writen for Fred Astaire. Many artist have recorded One For My Baby including Frank Sinatra, but the first time I ever heard this song was when Bette Midler sang to Johnny Carson on his final Tonite Show. I also have the Lena Horne version on a 78 that I play on my 1917 Victor Victrola. All verions are beautiful in their own way but no one creates a mood like Lady Day.

Jan 15, 2012 - It's a shame that her life was so hard. Her voice was one of a kind. I had some old records with her music and they were beyond belief.

May 2, 2012 - Interesting how the intro to this version sounds a lot like "Black Coffee" (circa 1974 Pointer Sisters)

May 21, 2012 - There was a photo of Billie on the vid that was soooooo sad I wanted to reach out and touch her! And all the photos depicted her ups and (mostly) downs through the years But that aside, yes, the video was fantastic. Her voice came through clear as a bell Thank you for this post

Dec 23, 2011 - I am way to young to have ever heard her live but man do i wish i coulda. I believe in her own words she expressed in an interview that every time she sang ... the mood, the tempo, the tembre of her voice was different. What it must have been to be in the room when she performed with all those unique musicians, and to know that no one would ever hear that song quite that way again unless it was recorded at that time.
