It is a skill which I remember was encouraged in order to develop exactly what @MeritMaestro suggests and impart the improvisation. I guess, in the end, it's about communicating your playing to an audience. If they came to hear a guitar-player, they might not 'get' the concurrent scat which might detract from the guitar's voice. No right or wrong; just a choice a player makes.

He is/was connected with something called be-bop. Andrea follows Dylan's folklor in this latest production so he gets only 3 out of 10. (mouth harmonica is absent?)
