Because of the election of some mediocre government that forgot the reason why they are there. I recognize that the USA has helped us but at a certain point through the history of our island it has taken shities decision too. Bottom line is this, Hawaii, and Alaska are not meant to be states and this is from the "natives" themselves. It behooves Puerto Ricans to become a state, otherwise if they become independent they will still rely militarily and economically from the U.S. (given a dictator takes over).
