The Vietnamese alphabets were developed by Alexander de Rhodes; a novitiate of Society of Jesus in Rome. He arrived at Vietnam for missionary work and spread Catholicism. He developed and published the first Portugese-Latin-Vietnamese dictionary. It later was adopted by Vietnamese scholars. Lookup Alexander de Rhodes in Google or Wikipedia.
