Title: Cycling to school; Culemborg (Netherlands)
Added: Sep 3, 2011
Author: markenlei
Duration: 4:0
Description:
Hundreds of thousands of children cycle to school every morning in the Netherlands. Kids cycling up to 15km one way are no exception. The roads and streets are literally full of cycling children for about one hour. The "cycle highway" from Geldermalsen to Culemborg is one such road. Hundreds of children going to school take the same safe route here. They form spontaneous groups and the closer they get to school the larger the groups become. When the school bell rings and all the children are in class, the cycle highway looks as deserted as it was before the kids went to school.See: http://bicycledutch.wordpress.com/2011/09/08/cycling-to-school/

Jan 5, 2012 - It must give a sense of independence to kids that they don't have where I live. Because they are nearly all dropped to school in cars.

Jan 12, 2012 - The trade-off however, is that when you live in the Netherlands you can't afford a car at 16 or 18, or even 21. I know many 30-years old who have never owned a car.

Jan 13, 2012 - Not many 16, 18 year olds in the US can afford cars either; mostly it's their parents buying them one, which is why at least half of the 17-18 year olds in my high school drove to school everyday. 21 year olds, maybe, although they probably have loads of loans from college alone. Such is the culture in this country. I don't know about anyone else, but I personally feel that 16 (or 14 in some states) is a little young to be operating machinery such as a car. 18 would be better.

Jan 21, 2012 - I'd love to be able to ride a bike to school but my school is 1/2 away driving so I can't. These kids have such a beautiful route to travel by too! Jealous ;)

Jan 23, 2012 - Its funny to see all these obese out of shape dutch kids riding I would say that the Dutch are the most overweight country because of the high number of cyclist that do cardio . Unlike a lot of American kids are the best shape by playing video games for hours and eating super size fast food and sitting on there duffs thats the best cardio

Apr 2, 2012 - I bet the local Bike shop is making bank. While it would be nice if we had more stuff like this in America, we have ppl that would steal the bikes and other crap. Makes me wish I was in the Netherlands or somewhere just as peaceful.

Apr 28, 2012 - Bike theft is a very common issue in the Netherlands. If you park on private property, like a secured depot, gated parking at school/the office or your own garden shed, you'll be okay most of the time. But in public spaces, especially in the cities, you'll need a big lock if you still want it to be there the next day. This was filmed in suburbia. But the bigger the town, the worse condition the bikes are in. Why? They often get stolen, so people there don't risk investing in them anymore.

KrunchyJD Says:
May 16, 2012 - How is that child abuse? So it isnt child abuse feeding kids McFat burgers and taking them to school in your SUV and putting all that crap in the air from all the extra cars, and then giving them no exercise.
Seregfaroth Says:
May 25, 2012 - As someone who lives in the Netherlands I'm pretty sure it isn't that we can't afford cars (we are actually one of the richest countries in the world). A lot of people just don't need them.
alextact Says:
May 28, 2012 - Imagine the traffic chaos if even half of those kids had to be dropped to school by car, due to lack of cycling infrastructure.

Jrhynie Says:
Dec 29, 2011 - Veilige cycluswegen en gezonde kinderen. Droevig niet in Engeland or Schotland.
