By definition, "the 'friend zone' refers to a platonic relationship where one person wishes to enter into a romantic relationship while the other does not." Simply getting their attention isn't very romantic. It isn't like your life gets better if you hold it in and don't advance. I can't see why people don't do 'all or nothing'.
