Mar 20, 2012 - And even better, excuse me, but Miles enables me to hear the original tune and the head melody, which is amazing. Monk does too much improvisation for my taste, but I may be sort of ignorant here. Forgive me that, please.

Mar 26, 2012 - This is wonderful but if you had to own only one solo piano version of Round Midnight it would surely be the 6:41 min version on the Thelonious Himself album [Riverside label 1957] Seems there's a problem with copyright in uploading it on utube. Believe as of today there's only one song from that album now available on utube. But believe me, if you buy the album you are going to be floored by Round Midnight. All solo piano, except last track with Coltrane and Wilbur Ware.

Apr 4, 2012 - I'd strongly disagree. Improvisation is an essential part of jazz, and everyone does it. What you're referring to is embellishment of the melody, which Miles also does a lot of as well. It just different stylistically. Doing this to the melody keeps it fresh; Monk had probably played it 100s of times before, and everyone knew the melody. The genius of monk is how he can find the exact spot where it's far enough from the orig, but still recognisable. Check out Bill Evans for a smoother version!

Apr 4, 2012 - Miles (during most of his many phases), was all about playing lyrically, while Monk played as expressively and as "out" as he could. It really depends on what you're in the mood for. There is a version that Miles did with strings, where he strayed too far from the melody, postponing the phrase entrances; I hate it, as do most jazz listeners.

Apr 4, 2012 - This isn't what I was talking about earlier, but this might change your perception of Miles. youtube. com/watch?v=hwFrxKhp8a8&feature=endscreen&NR=1You can't really generalise him as one style or another, because he went through so many phases. I'm guessing you've listened to a lot of Kind of Blue, or maybe the Prestige recordings with JC and Red Garland, but this is quite different!

May 23, 2012 - good question. It is the exceptional and odd people that make this life worth living. Of course usually they are suppressed because the so called "average man" is too afraid and likes better the safety of mediocrity.
