Title: DARPA Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program
Added: May 31, 2011
Author: DARPAtv
Duration: 2:54
Description:
In 2005, DARPA announced the Nano Air Vehicle (NAV) program and its goal to develop agile and flyers system that could fit in one hand. This video chronicles the development of a "hummingbird" flyer by Aerovironment from concept to prototype demonstration and introduction to the public. A number of difficult design and engineering challenges were overcome in the course of the program, particularly in the wing structure, propulsion and control actuators. Numerous complete prototypes were built and tested to assess and improve the performance of the systems shown in the video. The final prototype achieves the noteworthy milestone of 2-wing flapping hovering and fast forward flight with all power sources on the aircraft and all controls implemented through modulation of the wing strokes in a shape that resembles a real hummingbird and carries and on-board camera that relays video to the pilot in real time. Feb 26, 2012 - Pretty cool that DARPA could get something like this built, but I'm wondering tho' if is more efficient or better in any way than a rotary wing solution. I've got no problem with the government spending money on basic R&D, but practical advantages over existing systems should be a result of the research. How much did we spend on this program?

Mar 6, 2012 - No.. they actually don't.

THEMSASBOYZ Says:
Mar 6, 2012 - This is nice, Now to make a trillion of em with rockets and no need for human control. Just like the millitary planned all along. They dont care about your brilliant minds...Just their rocket robots. Have a good day.

Mar 7, 2012 - so much for a stealthy operation when the other guys hear a giant annoying buzzing soundoh by the way...this is what the government is spending their big bucks on? something you can find in the toy section at walmart?

Mar 12, 2012 - its flapping its wings like a bird........
LegendLength Says:
Mar 14, 2012 - Might be quieter than rotary winged. At least it gets quieter for larger wingspans.

Mar 30, 2012 - yea pretty cool stuff that DARPA employees get to work with, altho personally i wouldnt submit my ideas willingly towards developing technologies that further enable other men to manipulate control brainwash torture spy on and kill people, i'll admit its some pretty advanced shit, until one day what u think is a humming bird at your feeder, zaps a hole in your brain all because you searched "truth" on google.. this kinda stuff isnt to serve the collective, its to serve the investor's agenda's.
Doorpatch Says:
Apr 9, 2012 - I was outside today and saw two of these things fly by. They were having a conversation about me being a stupid clunk. I called them some bad words. They did not zap my brain. However they did send a swift kick to my backside. They then gave me instructions about their behavior modification plan.

Apr 26, 2012 - America: we have robotic humming birds.
inagod Says:
May 25, 2012 - I can build a small platform with small rotors which is more stable, why the bird, unless it really performs like a bird,a humming bird does not fly like this,it has his body titled in a hover.
