Title: World's Prettiest Bassline (James Jamerson, 1970)

Added: Mar 4, 2007

Author: Brilliantbeing

Duration: 3:1

Description:
The Jackson 5 performed Darling Dear on their third album (The Third Album). James Jamerson played bass on this selection with a style and fluency seldom heard in common hours. The bassline is so soulful and beautiful that many musicians speak of having "sung" the bassline instead of the equally great lead vocal line delivered by the gifted and prodigious Michael Jackson. The bassline would qualify as a "wonder of the world" since it is such a bold departure from anything heard at that time, or since. James Jamerson is arguably the greatest bass player to ever live. He played on more number 1 hit records than any other bassist, or musician in the history of popular music. He died a bitter and brokenhearted man since he was neither adequately compensated or recognized for his immeasurable contributions to the spirit and practice of bass playing.

MADGUNZ76 Says:

Mar 11, 2012 - always a moron or two who cant wait at the chance to hate on someone. And yes wooten , jaco, and those other guys are great, but how many number one songs have those guys played on. Jamerson was instrumental in the production and arrangement of many of those hits. It wasnt ..."hey james play this" it was like " hey james i have this idea" James, "hmm ...ok well lets do it like this" bam!!!! a hit. And to me personally , all that slap bassing is horse shit. If ego had a sound it would be slap

MADGUNZ76 Says:

Mar 11, 2012 - I was trying to teach a friend's son, a 15 year old, some basic blues bass runs . he couldnt embrace the concept. but he could slap and thump all day. He got frustrated with it and started getting angry and went back to slapping and thumping. i was like oh well play on dude.

ronaldbernier1 Says:

Apr 29, 2012 - James was a great bassist for his time and what he was doing with the Motown Funk Sound. However someone like Cliff Burton could do everything James Jamerson could do on bass, plus make a bass sound like a lead guitar. I would say Jamerson was maybe the most influential bass player, like a building block to modern Rock & Roll, but Cliff Burton could do so much more with a bass it's unreal.

ZGAZBass28 Says:

Apr 29, 2012 - agree on Cliff Burton for the most part, but Jamerson was the originator and everyone else who followed in that improvisational vein owes much to JJ, whether they ever listened to Motown or not...Jack Bruce, Paul McCartney, JP Jones, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, Geezer Butler and many other rock bassists were heavily influenced by Jamerson...in a sense any bassist who is influenced by any of these bassmasters are also influenced by Jamerson

TBONETYZLER333 Says:

May 1, 2012 - Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Manring, some of the best/most influential bass players to ever live...this isn't by any means a complete list but by looking up/studying these three it'll open up a new dimension to your playing and thinking....and through these three you'll discover even more great players that are not as widely known as they should be. :D

TBONETYZLER333 Says:

May 1, 2012 - That being said I don't want my comment to be misconstrued; I have a great respect for Cliff Burton, and in my humble opinion I believe that Metallica died with him. After discovering the three great players I mentioned, my focus has shifted more into funk, jazz, and soloist/experimental playing; but I still remember who got me into playing and that's Steve Harris from Iron Maiden, and he's still one of my favorites.

pinhead907 Says:

May 3, 2012 - I love Cliff as much as the next guy, but I don't see music as a competition. I think it's more about who does it for you, one way or another - especially bass. Jamerson was clearly visionary. And if Cliff was a technically better bassist, that's great - but I believe that it was Issac Newton who said something like "if I've seen further than others, it's because I've stood on the shoulders of giants." I'm sure Cliff would have agreed.

mastercatx Says:

May 11, 2012 - This bass line was so nasty I puked all over my PC. Simply Awesome.

TheBlueBandYTAccount Says:

May 18, 2012 - HAHAHAHAHAHA! Seriously. Cliff Burton? C'mon, I like the guy, but... His thumb is all over the neck, he's a pickplayer, he's just mashing. Go listen to him if you think he's better, but don't go waste our time.

uglycustard1 Says:

May 20, 2012 - Herbie Flowers

ZingZiggyZang Says:

May 26, 2012 - Cool, waiting for a play along.
