Description:
Before Kidman and McGregor there was Zsa Zsa Gabor!!! Henri de Toulouse Lautrec frequently visits the Moulin Rouge, where he drinks cognac and draws sketches of the dancers and singers. Though the son of a French count, Henris legs were badly deformed by a childhood fall, and his personal life is often unhappy as a result. While he is going home one night, a spirited young woman of the streets, Marie, asks him for help. He falls in love with her, and the two become involved in a tumultuous relationship. It becomes increasingly difficult for Toulouse Lautrec to balance his personal feelings, his artistic abilities, and his family name and position.

Nov 23, 2011 - But Baz Luhrmann's musical Moulin Rouge is not a remake of this Moulin Rouge. They are two thoroughly unrelated stories. They both happen to feature the same historical figure in the same historical dance hall, and they have the same title. That's where the similarities end.

TheOnlySilverUnicorn Says:

Nov 23, 2011 - Well, no. Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! is most definitely NOT a remake of this Moulin Rouge by any stretch of the intellect. They feature the same historical figure in the same historical building and have similar titles. That's where the similarities end. They are thoroughly unrelated stories. As a sensible person that has watched both, I'm sure you'll agree that one movie really has nothing at all to do with the other, if you sit down and think about it critically.

TheOnlySilverUnicorn Says:

Nov 23, 2011 - I cannot help but laugh, laugh, laugh at all the people who really believe that Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! is a remake of this Moulin Rouge. Really? Really? LOL! Just because they feature the same historical figure in the same historical building and have similar titles, one is a remake of the other? Are those people incapable of understanding the vast differences in the storyline, characters, and overall theme? Lautrec was a clown in Luhrmann's production. Lautrec is a tragic artist, here.

Dec 26, 2011 - I was brought here by the New Bomb Turks song Born Toulouse-Lautrec. One of my favorite lines from the film is "Curiosity is my cardinal weakness." 1:35:57 My favorite line from the song is "No heroes, no leaders, no artists, no God." Punk rock is educational.

Mar 20, 2012 - This version is too clean, it's supposed to be the 1900's and in that era, things were not nice and clean. good movie thought but i prefer the modern version.

simonegad Says:

Apr 11, 2012 - i agree-this is a wonderful original version. i also love the baz luhrmann version-however. but this is my favorite of the 2 and is more according to lautrec as a tragic and wonderful artist of his time. the great jose ferrer playing the great henri toulouse lautrec. terrrfic direction and film by john huston. and the great zsa zsa gabor among a great cast of actors.

simonegad Says:

Apr 11, 2012 - i also love seeing lautrec's beautiful work in this film. a wonderful reminder.
