Title: Where The Wild Things Are - Early DISNEY CG Animation Test

Added: Oct 12, 2006

Author: kurtori

Duration: 2:5

Description:
1983 animation test by Disney, directed by John Lasseter (who went on to direct and produce most of the Pixar films, including Toy Story). Back then Disney owned the film rights to the Where The Wild Things Are books... they didn't use them, though, so they lost them. Check out this amazing test, which combined traditional hand-drawn, 2D animation with then-state-of-the-art 3D computer animation!

Oct 22, 2009 - Disney is a great example of how a great company with talented people and awesome work can fall victim to its own success and greed. I am ashamed at how many people still mindlessly subscribe to the glassy-eyed "Disney is so wonderful" mentality. Yes, it WAS good. But it is no longer. It's time to move on.I just hope that Pixar can liberate itself from Disney's greedy clutches. It would be a shame to see Pixar succumb to the corporate machine.

Oct 22, 2009 - I'm amazed they managed to pull this of in 1983 where the majority of computers were only 8 to 16 bit.The Disney management could see that this had potential and should have been exploited. It should have put CG movies forward about 5 years or more. But instead of continuing development they decided to focus more on a project that eventually made little or no sense. The Black CauldronWTF were they thinking!!!

MrOiManDudeGuy Says:

Oct 22, 2009 - man, I sure wish they could've done a feature-length film with this. Would've been amazing!

harassed09 Says:

Oct 23, 2009 - Where the wild things are would have been okay with me AS A CARTOON, not as a pixar computer animation. Disney should make cartoons again.

jcgamer107 Says:

Oct 24, 2009 - I agree, it wouldve been cool to have this one AND the Spike Jonze one.

runnmd Says:

Oct 24, 2009 - I am so glad Disney didn't make it. Would've been way too cute and pretty and, well, Disney. I think most boys stop watching Disney movie's when they're Max's age. I sure did.

TammyGarilo Says:

Oct 24, 2009 - i would love it if they made this version too!! There aren't real disney movies now adays!!

ricarleite Says:

Oct 24, 2009 - It is impressive, but it doesn't blend in so well. They were right to shelve it. Remember there were no "cell shading" techniques back then.

caftw11 Says:

Oct 24, 2009 - This is really impressive for 1983!

massetri95 Says:

Oct 25, 2009 - They should make a Where the Wild Things Are movie like this, but hand draw it and make it old school. That would be cool.

samirc Says:

Oct 25, 2009 - Max looks evil!

veggiet2009 Says:

Oct 25, 2009 - John Lasseter originally proposed to use this technique in doing "The Brave Little Toaster." Unfortunately Disney turned him down and fired him because they didn't see the computer saving them any money...

redmanghost Says:

Oct 26, 2009 - dodged a bullet

Gatoboy15 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - BTW Max reminds me of myself he looks like a cat not a wolf because he has a persian cat tail in this video.

Gatoboy15 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - Hay I'm a wild thing, a 5 year old, & I'm 25. I was born on this year & a reason why I'm love being Max a wild thing. I've been jumping like him since 2000 on my bed at night while I was wearing cat ears & a tail. As of sept 19 of 09 I now wear snow leopard paws for my feet, snow leopard boxer pants with a tail, & a snow leopard mask in bed. I do have hand paws that I wear sometimes in the day. Since 2000 I've been meowing at night in bed & sometimes during the day. I'm a snow leopard cat kid.

Gatoboy15 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - OMG & WOW I'm the only oldest real wild thing in the us & I love it. I didn't even realized this untill 3 months ago when I first saw this & knowing about the movie. I did have the book as a kid but my mom gave it to my cousins. BTW I bought the book on oct 2nd & I've been watching just the cartoon part from CelGenStudios in my favorites. LOL Max the plushie & I love his suit that I wish to squeeze that booty with an animal inside of it.

inmyopinion999 Says:

Oct 27, 2009 - he's actually wearing a wolf suit.

Gatoboy15 Says:

Oct 31, 2009 - I'm a lost boy from the cartoon Peter Pan. I'm not an adult I love being an animal kid.

Gatoboy15 Says:

Oct 31, 2009 - I don't care if he wearing a wolf suit I still say that Max reminds me of myself. BTW even if he had whiskers in this he would look like a cat. That's the 1 thing that Mr. Sendak had for the movie & book. Cats have long whiskers not wolfs. I think he's looks like a cat in the movie & a part cat part wolf in the book. This is kind of LOL in an odd way. If Max had a black tail in the movie it would make more sence.

MrOiManDudeGuy Says:

Oct 31, 2009 - yes, EXACTLY!!

mfbbs Says:

Nov 3, 2009 - lmfao

EleanorM1979 Says:

Nov 7, 2009 - Wow, CG animation has come a long way since 1983! I'm surprised they could do this then... Technology never ceases to amaze me...

XSeshedaX Says:

Nov 16, 2009 - Ummmm yeah I'm not quite sure how to reply to that except that I think..... uh....... never mind

mosesmoorhouse Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - Thats really well done!!

justanothermoralfag Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - I bet Disney is kicking themselves for not using the film rights now.
