Dec 11, 2011 - I am doing the AI, ML and DB classes. What is amazing to me is that a textbook is not necessary because the lectures are so good.

Dec 11, 2011 - That's exactly how I feel. In fact, I'm using a lot of what I learned in the AI and ML classes to complete my final year project. What's surprising is the first time I came across any of the terms/concepts was during the video lectures, and already I feel confident enough to apply them in real-world situations. Thanks go out to everyone who made the online classes possible.

Dec 12, 2011 - I would say that people are more likely to watch a video lecture than to do homework, because it's easier.

Dec 13, 2011 - We really don't need these colleges we can't afford. The ease of getting loans and credit just makes the tuition rates go higher and higher. . The online learning programs should be better recognized and should have the authority to give exams based on their material so ordinary people can self-study and get legitimate degrees online for a fraction of the cost of a big name mortar and brick college.

Dec 16, 2011 - Learning in a social context and self paced learning are a contradiction in terms. Its true, the concept of merit badges and other socially facilitated feedback are grossly underestimated, particularly for boys

Feb 9, 2012 - You don't have to feel depressed. I think it's pretty amazing! (btw i know this post is 2 months old) Imagine the implications...it implies that a GREAT percentage of those that have an Internet connection are probably capable of learning and that they want to do so as well! We can gain new insight on what the problems might be and we can gain and give new hope to other people. That is f'n fantastic! These are things that are fun, interesting and important things to discuss.

Apr 2, 2012 - At several places in the discussion there is mention of the fact that people want a credential of some sort or their learning. In fact we already do it. Advanced Placement is an obvious example. So is the G.E.D. It should be fairly easy to add AP exam offerings. For instance we could have AP Exam Number Theory or AP Differential Equations. We could also use technology to make AP exams more available with respect to both time and place. None of this is hard.
