Title: The Government's War on Cameras!
Added: May 26, 2011
Author: ReasonTV
Duration: 8:26
Description:
Who will watch the watchers? In a world of ubiquitous, hand-held digital cameras, that's not an abstract philosophical question. Police everywhere are cracking down on citizens using cameras to capture breaking news and law enforcement in action. In 2009, police arrested blogger and freelance photographer Antonio Musumeci on the steps of a New York federal courthouse. His alleged crime? Unauthorized photography on federal property.Police cuffed and arrested Musumeci, ultimately issuing him a citation. With the help of the New York Civil Liberties Union, he forced a settlement in which the federal government agreed to issue a memo acknowledging that it is totally legal to film or photograph on federal property. Although the legal right to film on federal property now seems to be firmly established, many other questions about public photography still remain and place journalists and citizens in harm's way. Can you record a police encounter? Can you film on city or state property? What are a photographer's rights in so-called public spaces? These questions will remain unanswered until a case reaches the Supreme Court, says UCLA Law Professor Eugene Volokh, founder of the popular law blog The Volokh Conspiracy. Until then, it's up to people to know their rights and test the limits of free speech, even at the risk of harassment and arrest.Who will watch the watchers? All of us, it turns out, but only if we're willing to fight for our rights.Produced by Hawk Jensen and Zach Weissmueller. Camera by Jim Epstein and Jensen. Mar 20, 2012 - The double standard is obnoxious. The argument in agreement with government and police surveillance and wire-tapping is "if you're not doing anything wrong then you have nothing to hide". Which ever think-tank/PR firm came up with that is genius - its hard to argue against that. However, point your camera at some cops and see how quickly they get in your face. Why? Do they have something to hide? Apparently so...

Apr 15, 2012 - In P.A. all though it is a two party state when it concerns the wire tapping law the state supreme court has ruled there is no expectation of privacy when a citizen is dealing with police or while filming in public.
ELMATRACA69 Says:
Apr 16, 2012 - As long we have District attorneys not willing to persecute Police Officers for Violations Of Civil Rights and the Constitution.... and Judges enforcing only Statutes... we the People are going to continue suffering the Police State.
Donberto12 Says:
Apr 21, 2012 - FILM POPO!!!
TheJDFLA Says:
Apr 23, 2012 - I continually hear all this rhetoric about how cops are brave and heroic. It seems to me they are afraid of harmless little cameras. What is it cops always say to people? "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to fear." Well then, why are you so threatened by that camera filming you, officer?
igotpoet Says:
Apr 25, 2012 - the problem is much like society. They are only given the minimal basics of training. As individuals it is deemed as our duty to develop ourselves as much as possible. It's obvious to see that these 'Police Officers' and all citizens who are not successful in life don't do that. Which is why they are exactly the way they are. People work because of a paycheck not because its what they want to do, it leads to arrogant, obtrusive behavior. Similar to a community of 5 Y.O trying to solve a problem.
igotpoet Says:
Apr 25, 2012 - We all know the problem. People are lazy and don't have the mental capacity to push themselves beyond their limits, they settle for whats socially accepted within their close minded comfort zones. Because if they did they would see life in a much broader perspective. Change your mind, change your life. Basic principles of success. Earn through creativity not through slave labor. if you wouldnt do soemthing for free don't do it!
Lolp821 Says:
Apr 28, 2012 - One thing that I never hear mentioned on why people don't know the law, is that they don't teach you the law just like they don't teach you your rights. The law is "what that guy said" or "Common sense" and you just go along with it. Ignorance means you will be patronised and intimidated because they seemingly know more than you. Just like the genius idea of not teaching about drugs, how can you avoid something if you don't know what it is.
ShowTyme1994 Says:
May 1, 2012 - You can say that again.
WinstonChuchhill Says:
May 15, 2012 - I knew a kid in highschool that said he wanted to be a cop so he could taze people and take their drugs. I don't wanna live in this world anymore
jay adams Says:
May 26, 2012 - I have a question, rather than a response. In the states where it considered a wire tapping violation, are law enforcement's cars equiped with audio and video recorders, and if so, can they be charged or sued if they refuse to turn them off if you do not consent to being recorded? Ok, make that two questions. If you inform a cop, or anyone for that matter, that you are recording and they continue to speak, are they not in fact consenting to being recorded?

Mar 17, 2012 - hahahahahhaha lool he just lays on the ground.
