Title: The Take (La Toma) English subtitles (1/9)

Added: Feb 3, 2009

Duration: 9:57

Description:
(I've seen some versions of this on the web with out-of-sync-sound, hope this one stays in sync after uploading)Description from: http://thetake.org/index.cfm?page_name=synopsisIn suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act - The Take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.In the wake of Argentina's dramatic economic collapse in 2001, Latin America's most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. The Forja auto plant lies dormant until its former employees take action. They're part of a daring new movement of workers who are occupying bankrupt businesses and creating jobs in the ruins of the failed system. But Freddy, the president of the new worker's co-operative, and Lalo, the political powerhouse from the Movement of Recovered Companies, know that their success is far from secure. Like every workplace occupation, they have to run the gauntlet of courts, cops and politicians who can either give their project legal protection or violently evict them from the factory. The story of the workers' struggle is set against the dramatic backdrop of a crucial presidential election in Argentina, in which the architect of the economic collapse, Carlos Menem, is the front-runner. His cronies, the former owners, are circling: if he wins, they'll take back the companies that the movement has worked so hard to revive.Armed only with slingshots and an abiding faith in shop-floor democracy, the workers face off against the bosses, bankers and a whole system that sees their beloved factories as nothing more than scrap metal for sale. With The Take, director Avi Lewis, one of Canada's most outspoken journalists, and writer Naomi Klein, author of the international bestseller No Logo, champion a radical economic manifesto for the 21st century. But what shines through in the film is the simple drama of workers' lives and their struggle: the demand for dignity and the searing injustice of dignity denied._________________In general, this documentary shows A) how neo-liberal politics can utterly destroy a country and B) how syndicalist and anarchist concepts can work today. (Which are exactly the concepts behind the resistance, although they seldom call themselves anarchist they certainly achieve what anarchists have been striving for for generations.)

Apr 4, 2011 - Oh, my God! Her whole family suffered that contagious disease called communism! She should be treated to cure it!I know these experiences first hand, and I assure you most people involved aren´t communist or even left wingers. They´re just workers who suddenly found theirselves without a job cause the owners of the enterprises where they worked just run away with all the money and leaved them without any job. What would YOU do in that case?

teddyrocker Says:

Apr 4, 2011 - Under Peron worker´s share of the national income reached 50% and an enormous local industry was developed. Politically, he was an autoritarian bastard almost fascist, yes, but economically his first administration did it fairly well.

teddyrocker Says:

Apr 4, 2011 - A country without a strong bourgeoisie committed with their fellow compatriots cant afford a free market, because that bourgeoisie will suck the country´s wealth and put it someplace else where they can make easier and faster profits, and will never return them to their country. That´s exactly what happened to Argentina all along the 90s, becaming the cause of the 2001 crisis.

geistkommando Says:

Jun 10, 2011 - @teddyrocker Peron was more close to Nazism than fascism. Nazism is just right of being economically centrist, Peron I would consider to be just left. Fascism is far right. It's not Communist (Marxist-Leninsim), which is authoritarian, but is libertarian and democratic. The Bolsheviks destroyed workers collectives. Worker control is more in line with Libertarian Socialism, specifically Anarcho-Syndicalism. Also, you're absolutely correct in that the workers were fighting for work, not ideology.

teddyrocker Says:

Dec 18, 2011 - You don´t need to kill anybody nor start any war to be fascist. You just need to have such ideology. Perón himself publicly expressed his admiration for Mussolini and even served as Argentine ambassador to the fascist Italy. Where did he took refuge when he was exiled? In Franco's Spain The way the CGT was organized followed the fascist unions model and even the discourse about the subject was similar to Italian fascism approach Not to speak about first Peronism rampant censorship

May 26, 2012 - this is our future in the US WHEN we wake up-- if you think that the workers' coop is the villain then you are either far wealthier than your spelling, grammar and vocabulary would lead the casual reader to believe-- or you watch Faux Noise.i'm guessing the latter.
