http://howtoarchitect.com/http://www.powhow.com/classes/how-to-architect Learn with Doug via LIVE Webcam Classes at Powhow.com!Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all vertical lines. Lastly, when making your Os, Qs, Cs, Gs, even 8s and 9s, the letters and numbers are simply combinations of semi circles. Even the letter S is made the same way. These are two images from my portfolio. They are good examples of how your strings of words will come together to form orderly yet animated paragraphs. This is a quote I found from Tyron Edwards Dictionary of thoughts I enjoy referring to from time to time. It seemed appropriate for a youtube video because giving people the most amount of knowledge in the least amount of time is really what drives the information age. So, remember hand lettering is about style and legibility. Mine is definitely stylized and probably a little tough to read sometimes. So thanks for checking out how to write like an architect. Im Doug

Mar 8, 2012 - No, you don't have to write like this, as an architect student, I can tell you have options. This example in the video used above is refered to as "Triangle Lettering", but there also exists "Extended Lettering", which is most common among engineers, and "Inclined Lettering" which is actually in many opinions the most elegant, and the one that I use. But yes all architects need to know this type of hand writing, for things like titling their works and presenting their drawings.

Mar 22, 2012 - B, D, O and E don't connect properly at bottom. D looks like lower case b. A, J, K, L, M, N, W, and Y are all over exaggerated too far back and upwards to the right. J looks like a U. X looks like a falling lower case t. S should be looped at bottom to match top. 2 and 3 look like they fell over. 8 and 0 are not connected. Loop of the 9 is over exaggerated. Straight edge to guide your lines is unproductive (use graph paper). Use a .7 or .9 HB or F beveled lead if you want beauty.

Apr 4, 2012 - Your 'A's are like triangles. I got laid off and probably fired for doing my 'A's like that. Be careful you don't do too much 'style' you should be still close to 'block' so you are readable. Thanks for the video. :)

Apr 10, 2012 - You got fired for making your A's like triangles? That sounds ludicrous. How should they be made?
HiLandR Says:
Apr 16, 2012 - I think your gaps and not completing legs to the guide line is just plain distracting. Architectural lettering, by its use was intended to not have personal style. It was intended to be uniform, therefor allowing multiple people to letter in multiple locations on any given drawing.

May 12, 2012 - How to architect? How to do any thing in school? get lots of money, or money enough and then you can take any courses, but if you live in one of those oppressed countries of latin america, or middle east, etc, first try to move out of your country, for which is going to be so difficult. then just dream like me....i couldn't make it because every material for drafting was so expensive, and the schools are for the privileged of $.
ilikeyouallot Says:
May 12, 2012 - even here in america they are turning down teachers and schools, they want to people become ignorant, and do only cheap labor, like the Nazis said human life is cheap, i used to work inthe t.v. for 12 years, one day i went to the office of the owner of the company and i told him that we could use t.v. to educate people for free, he said to me "i give shit to the people and people eat it happy because they don't know that they don't know. we r only in it because of the money.
