Title: Noam Chomsky on US Economic Crisis: Joblessness, Excessive Military Spending and Healthcare

Added: Sep 13, 2011

Author: democracynow

Duration: 14:57

Description:
DemocracyNow.org - President Obama sent his new jobs proposal to Congress on Monday with a plan to pay for the $447 billion package by raising taxes on the wealthy. Democracy Now! interviews MIT Professor Emeritus Noam Chomsky, who says "huge military spending, a very low taxes by the rich [and corporations] ... those are problems, fundamental problems that have to be dealt with if there is going to be anything like successful economic and social development in the United States." As Republican presidential candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, calls Social Security a "ponzi scheme," and Democrats buy into the narrative that the program is in crisis, Chomsky notes that, "To worry about a possible problem 30 years from now, which can incidentally be fixed with a little bit of tampering here and there, as was done in 1983, to worry about that makes absolutely no sense unless you're trying to destroy the program."For the complete transcript, to download the podcast, or for additional Democracy Now! reports about the U.S. economic crisis, visit http://www.democracynow.orgFOLLOW DEMOCRACY NOW! Dec 29, 2011 - HOW TO FIX THE ECONOMYAmerica's economic foundation is crumbling. For this reason, we must lean to the right -- allowing our conservative roots to thrive. We must concentrate on America's traditional foundation -- small farms. Basically, growing food. And we must strengthen our sense of family and community to build a spirit of brotherhood/sisterhood again, lifting our morale. Then we must copy the geniuses -- in the arts, technology, sciences, academics, military, learning from their examples.

America has recovered way better than most other western nations

Feb 14, 2012 - Oh. My. God. I love that idea! I would even pay to see it ffs! I love both of them for different reasons, if they could find common ground we would live in paradise, when it comes to capitalism meeting voluntary socialism. Gogogogo, make the calls already ;) peace

BaldyV Says:

Feb 17, 2012 - Stock markets are measured in dollars not resources. To say the stock market has doubled would make sense because we have literally doubled our money supply since 2009. There are too many ends in everyone's lives for any democratic government to make economic decisions. What we are doing is moving towards a dictatorship. Btw Thomas Jefferson proposed separation of state and economics. So Chomsky is wrong.

1986hangman Says:

Mar 3, 2012 - I think chomsky mistakes the roles of the executive branch with legislative branch when he talked about the public option. Obama may have taken the senate bill, and passed it through the House, but the original house bill did have a PO. After Coakley lost in Mass. .... Losing the super majority...This was the course Prrsident Obama took even though there is video of him preffering a single payer system. President Obama may have discarded what he wants ideally, but he doesnt write laws. He signs

rain2da1mental Says:

Mar 19, 2012 - (12m:35s) " the social security is based on a principal, it's based on the principal that you care about other people " ... " the preferred doctrines are 'just care about yourself, don't care about anyone else'; That's a very good way to trap and control people "

cdoftx Says:

Mar 22, 2012 - Unfortunately, all politicians can do is force people to pay taxes. A 25 year old with 2 kids needs their money a lot more than an 80 year old with a pension. Similarly, a 45 year old terminally ill with cancer and working to make it by shouldn't be made to "contribute" money they earn for when they reach the retirement age. The whole SS system is based on a flawed premise, that enough people will be around to pay in for every successive generation. God help us.

Charlie12241 Says:

Apr 12, 2012 - Why is healthcare expensive in the US for people who need it but, can't afford it?

dempsey981 Says:

May 15, 2012 - good quote,i remember it,and its worth thinking about.thank you.

flwrchldgn2seed Says:

May 20, 2012 - This should be required viewing for all. I am awake about the inequality of the US..are you? Or are you still buying into the non-issues the corporate-owned media tries to divert our att'n with? They create scenarios with religion, race and sx orientation, etc to distract us while the 2% grab even more of the wealth with a system that's been rigged for 30 yrs. Such stations as Fox malign the occupy movement cause they perceive the threat...continued

flwrchldgn2seed Says:

May 20, 2012 - I feel my only recourse is to vote Dem, since Obama at least tries to even the playing field somewhat and wants to protect social programs which the GOP/rich wants very badly to dismantle. Sure, hand all the money we've paid into Soc. Security for yrs over to Wall St and it will belong to the 400 soon. And the military spending goes almost 100% to benefit the 1 or 2 % at the top..directly and indirectly. The Ponzi scheme is the FED and Wall st.

flwrchldgn2seed Says:

May 20, 2012 - Did you listen to this whole video? He clearly states that SS is safe for ages..and will continue to be safe when we stop outsourcing our jobs. You want to hand all the money you've paid into SS to Wall St so they can get it into the hands of the 2%..I'll let the gov't continue to handle my SS trust fund.

flwrchldgn2seed Says:

May 20, 2012 - I can't see a common sense genius like Chomsky finding common ground with a corporate whore and defender of the 2% who own the US and have turned it into a 3rd world country...a man who wants to dismantle our entire govt system..from social programs to civil rights to air and water purity. Did you learn nothing from Reagan and deregulation? Paul would be great running the non-govt of Somalia.

cdoftx Says:

May 20, 2012 - How is a program that spends more than it takes in safe in the long term? If it was safe, the money we've put in would be saved instead of spent on current retirees.

cdoftx Says:

May 20, 2012 - This guy is nuts. To say that our health care system is unregulated. Its bought out by big business, but that happened because its regulated. High minded people set up an obscure committee, and 3 years later its taken over by big business. Shopping at Wal-Mart, which is pretty much an unregulated experience, has nothing in common with the stacks of mandated paperwork that's generated with a hospital visit.

AtmanAwaken Says:

May 24, 2012 - Nice one. Keep up the good work DN and Noam!
