It's quite possible to consider someone both extremely intelligent and extremely wrong, as I believe is the case with most of Kurzweil's intellectual opponents.Though I do, for whatever record, agree with his extrapolations. One really must read his work in writing, though, as he's not a great speaker.

Jul 1, 2010 - In addition to not getting exponential growth, the other thing people don't get is that it doesn't matter that the vast majority of attempts at progress fail. The reason it doesn't matter is because when they fail, they aren't copied. Only the things that succeed are copied. That's how it works, and why it's so predictable. Success, though rare, is copied and improved on. Failures, though common, are discarded and the time that was wasted on them is redirected toward better ideas.

Jul 1, 2010 - Look for "Naked Singularity" or "Black Hole Singularity" to distinguish the 2. While you may think Kurzweil's ideas science fiction, we'll reach the key milestone to the "science fiction" singularity (AI robotics surpassing humans) thousands of years before we ever approach either a black hole or a naked singularity out in the cosmos. So in terms of relevance (that is, the ability to change your life to take advantage of the knowledge) Kurzweil's singularity is more relevant.

I won't be alive when computers are particles of dust working together to form houses, drinking glasses, knifes and forks, beds, clothes, etc etc... if that ever happens it'll be in hundreds of years from now, at least... knowing about this science fiction is about as relevant as playing Mass Effect... singularities in equations in physics however, are there now.

Searching "Big Bang Theory" videos to explain cosmology to my son brought up sitcoms.The physical and information singularites do share divide by zero mathematics problems. In physics the divisor is distance, with Vinge's singularity it's technology life-cycle time..Do the math and the predictions are not so fanciful as you suppose. HDTV giving way to 3D tv. Makerbot is under $1K. Venter synthesized life. All 2010 stuff leading to unpredictable 2020 stuff.
