Apr 30, 2012 - If you look into the complex history of this song, you will realize that deep forest actually ripped off a lot of people in order to make a huge profit. Sampling and intellectual property is a really big deal in the western world, yet deep forest took the original recording from ethnomusicologist Hugo Zemp without his permission, and without giving any attribution or profit to the original solomon artist.

Apr 30, 2012 - Why is this seen as ok? Only because the people who performed these original songs do no fall within the western system. :( how sad. Making a profit on other peoples work is not ok. And advertising that work as coming from a "primitive past" is definitely not ok. However, i must admit I do like this song.... a lot. If only I didn't have the back story to ruin it for me.....

May 10, 2012 - i would like to know more about how the recording was used without his permission?was it stolen, how did the obtain the original recording? also, the recording really isn't his (Hugo Zemp) it belongs to the woman who is singing. that is whom i would be more concerned with.

May 10, 2012 - haha. I am really no expert. I just learned about this in my folklore class, then decided to come vent on youtube. According to my professor, Hugo Zemp went to the Salomon Islands to collect music. He paid the performers for taking their time. When he returned back to Europe, he made a CD, completely attributing the original singers, with Unesco that was to be used for educational purposes. WIth the original album I believe between all to 50% of the profit was returned to the people.

Nazygurl Says:

May 10, 2012 - Later, Deep Forest asked Hugo Zemp for permission to use the recordings. He said no. However, Deep Forest did not give up. They hired people from the original countries to send letters to Zemp saying it was ok to share the music. Zemp never really said anything in return. Deep Forest took this as permission. I believe after the Deep Forest cd was released Zemp, along with many other ethnomusicologists tried to fix it. However, they are only poor ethnomusicologist with no power.

Nazygurl Says:

May 10, 2012 - Like many other instances, money is power, and by then Deep Forest had a lot of money. They easily ignored all complaints. Honestly, what can a bunch of anthropologist and folklorists do at this point? Nothing. So yes, I believe that is the story of the "Sweet Lullaby." The moral is, do your research, and really question anything that is done for a profit. HA!- I guess that would be everything.

May 19, 2012 - I love it , it brings a strange kind of crying/ joyous emotion out of me when I hear it! I let my kid listen to it, it's good for the soul. If there was only this kind of music to influence the world, I believe it would truly be a happier place to live in. Don't u all agree?

May 26, 2012 - What happened to this great group? I want them desperately back.. :(

SuaveDavid Says:

May 27, 2012 - They're not a group, it's two french producers that features native voices of different origins. Deep Forest is still a running project. Look up the albums and songs on Amazon. Wikipedia has more information as well.

LazaGuru Says:

May 28, 2012 - Yes I know, I have all their albums. It's just that they haven't produced anything in years now. I miss the times of 'Boheme' and 'Madazulu'. But ofcourse genius albums like these don't come very often.

Toto8opus Says:

May 28, 2012 - I thought it was a black baby singing in a Forest. I was wrong. Nevertheless, I did not get what these people are singing exactly.
