Oct 28, 2010 - Had no awareness of Anna May Wong prior to watching "Shanghai Express" and was instantly captivated by her air of mystery and powerful presence. Having read a little of her career and life, I now have an admiration of her strong and independent character and her self-less promotion of positive ideals in protecting Chinese culture. Would loved to have met her in today's time!

Nov 24, 2010 - Mr. Charlie Chan Ching! What a lovely use of alliteration.

Nov 29, 2010 - maybe more likely Catalina island, where MGM shot Pirate Party, and maintained a small studio and office. The opening background looks very like the island shore.

swallin19 Says:

Nov 29, 2010 - I stand corrected , if that background right there is a duel carriage way road, and a church tower (mission style), and there are none on Catalina!

Jan 18, 2011 - Aside from the cringe-inducing Chinese stereotypes, at least we get to learn that Anna looked gorgeous dressed in jewel tones :)

Feb 21, 2011 - totally agree with you in hollywood today unless ur either a) mixed chinese and other or b) playing a role meant for chinese people ur not getting the part i mean how many times do we see a chinese or asain person in a leading role (memoirs of a geisha had a asains in a leading role but once again it was for an asain movie)not only do we almost see little to none asain people in hollywood we see clearly asain roles being take by well non asain people a great example is dragonballz

Sep 16, 2011 - I doubt this was filmed as late as 1937 since it's obviously pre-cope ...

Sep 17, 2011 - Always some goof trying to be an expert...sorry WB, IMDB, Wikipedia and the Vitaphone Restoration project have it over you hands down...go find another place to play expert

AnnaMayWongSociety Says:

Sep 24, 2011 - ahhh another expert comment....but listen little boy....you gotta post these things relevant to the post you made not some unrelated other person's comment, it may confuse adults. See below his foolish attempt to play expert and the comment that he just can not stand being shown up by bonafide experts

Nov 7, 2011 - Hard to watch, but Anna is magnificent as always.

Nov 24, 2011 - What a treat to see how stunningly beautiful Anna May Wong was in Technicolor. Elissa Landi wasn't chopped liver, either.

Dec 9, 2011 - Please people enough already with the stereo/racist jabs. It's done, its over, this is how they did it back then, and you can't go back and change it. Just sit back and enjoy. There are those of us that see this as spectacular historical/technical video. And what a gem!

swallin19 Says:

Dec 12, 2011 - This must rank as one of the best preserved examples of 3 strip Technicolor and shot with fully coated lenses, then quite new, giving better contrast. The quality is quite startling, better than the other MGM shorts of the time, and Warner's Shorts, all of which used the same processes for colour.

Jitterbugsalsa Says:

Dec 26, 2011 - Great to see the legendary Anna May Wong, but also great to see the wonderful Charley Chase in Colour too! Only a shame that we don't have any Laurel and Hardy clips in colour of this quality too! Thanks for posting!

Onlymusical Says:

Jan 16, 2012 - This is technicolor at its most brilliant: it's gone way downhill since, obviously.

Feb 29, 2012 - "Here's a gem from tokyo! Old Chinese proverb..." FAIL lol

selty Says:

Mar 15, 2012 - HOLY CRAP. ANNA MAY WONG SPEAKING OEGHAORHEG

selty Says:

Mar 15, 2012 - That goes for every colour that isn't white. No way do we every get blockbusters with a black lead, an asian lead or any foreign lead with an accent...

JubalCalif Says:

Apr 9, 2012 - Heavens to Murgatroid! THANKS for posting this. Beautiful Technicolor photography! You've MADE my day & my week! CHEERS, mate! :-)

unclepup Says:

May 26, 2012 - Thank you for this joy, I never thought I would see Miss Elissa Landi in color. I do not see what the controversy is about the appearance of Miss Wong. As always she spoke well and intelligently and did not seem demeaned in any way. Looking at it from the other way round, it was a compliment for MGM to put her in this. She was an international celebrity who would be expected to like and wear glamorous clothing. And she would never have submitted to any sort of "sing-song" stereotyping.
