Title: GUTTER GEESE (Maddy Prior & Ian Anderson)
Added: Feb 28, 2009

Description:
This is one of my favorite songs from Maddy Prior's 1978 solo album, "Woman In The Wings". The project not only had the distinction of featuring members of Jethro Tull as studio musicians, it was also supervised by Tull frontman, Ian Anderson. Ian, along with Martin Barre, John Glascock, Barriemore Barlow & David Palmer were each featured on individual tracks, evidently not wishing to have Maddy's album sound as if Tull had assembled as her back-up band. Even Ian's wife, Shona, sang backing vocals on one song, and the entire production was engineered by long-time Tull recording tech wizard, Robin Black. Anyway, the piece in the spotlight here is "Gutter Geese", and it's dedicated to all of my YouTube Tull friends.lyrics:"GUTTER GEESE"Come, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me see the best side of youCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me be good friends to youGay as a goose in the gutterMerry as mice in maltIf we've got a ha'porth of livelinessWhat care we're below the saltCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me see the best side of youCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me be good friends to youHappy as a sandboy buildingCastles in the airFlag waving from the mastIn a world without a careCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me see the best side of youCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me be good friends to youMay your castles never crumbleDreams never endRun to meet the sunshineDon't be drawn to the shadeCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me see the best side of youCome, come be merry, be my friendCome, come let me be good friends to you

Dec 18, 2010 - Yes, I really like the way you gave such well deserved props to the "back-up band". Truer words have rarely been spoken, that's for certain. Thanks so much for watching & commenting.

Dec 25, 2010 - I've been a fan of Steeleye Span since 1971. Seen them here in the States twice. I don't know how this album slipped by me but I am glad I found it. Excellent song!! Thank God for the internet!!

Dec 30, 2010 - Wow, very cool that you've seen Steeleye Span in concert here in the states. You were very fortunate, indeed. Yes, I became aware of Maddy's "Woman In The Wings" album just as it was first coming out on CD, and it's still quite a treasure to possess. I'm so glad that you finally discovered it for yourself. I agree, the internet really is quite a lovely window on a whole glorious array of obscure musical gems.

Jan 17, 2011 - Great song and extremely well crafted video - sat here with a headful of memories, have seen Maddy live more than once with Steeleye Span and also with another band in the mid nineties. Been a Tull fan since 68!! Memories too of when my children were small - now its the grandchildren!!

Jan 24, 2011 - Thanks so much for your kind compliment, and for taking the time to watch. Yes, this song has a very definite way of bringing back memories on many levels: my own childhood and the years spent in raising kids of my own. That's certainly something we have in common, I expect it's pretty universal amongst folks out there.. And you're so right, the grandchildren have a miraculous way of bringing things full circle, don't they? Always a pleasure to meet another long-standing Tull fan.

Feb 13, 2011 - Oh I had this album when I wore a smaller man's clothes. Long ago and far away. How nice to be reacquainted. And I love what you did to those photos. How did you get that effect?

Mar 6, 2011 - Yes, a treasure is exactly what she is. Thanks for watching, and all the best right back to you!

Mar 6, 2011 - Yes, I also used to wear a younger man's clothes back when I first heard this tune. Though rather than discovering it during its original release on vinyl, I didn't actually discover the song or album until appearing in CD form. Even so, it's quite a splendid musical treasure which deserves unyielding appreciation. Ah yes, the effect of which you spoke is merely a watercolor filter from one of my graphics programs, which I thought was an appropriate touch. Thanks for watching!

Apr 18, 2011 - please please, I am looking for a Maddy Prior album the raven? Can anyone help me find this??
gothling1955 Says:
Apr 18, 2011 - While it's not an album that I own at present (an oversight which I'll need to correct in pretty short order), I found a 1999 CD release by Maddy Prior entitled "Ravenchild". Would that be the one you're seeking? Amazon has it for just under $16, and their marketplace venders have it 'new' for just under $10 and 'used' for 99 cents. Sorry for sounding like a commercial, I'm just trying to help you out. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

May 25, 2011 - You're more than welcome. Though the pleasure is mine in receiving such nice comments as yours. Yes, Maddy's voice is quite distinctive, and has carried forth an amazing body of work over time. But this song will always remain special to me. Thanks for watching!

Sep 28, 2011 - Please, does anybody know the name of the Maddy Prior song where she sings 'through bushes and through briar'?
gothling1955 Says:
Sep 28, 2011 - "Bushes and Briars" is a classic folk song, and the opening lines are the very ones that you had quoted. I know that Maddy Prior is credited to have recorded it at some point, but sadly, I can't find any postings of it here on YouTube. Although there are many other artists that have been uploaded / featured here as singing it, such as Loreena McKennitt & Julie Christie.

Nov 14, 2011 - Thank you so much for this. I had this LP as a little boy in the late 70's. I have thought of this song throughout the years and am glad to see this here.
