Title: The Patriot - Battle of Camden Movie Clip (HD)
Added: Jan 1, 2010
Author: Promazo
Duration: 3:32
Description:
On the foggy morning of August 16, 1780, American and British armies clashed in the pine woods north of Camden, South Carolina, in one of the most important and influential battles of the Revolutionary War. An American victory would quash British plans to subjugate the Southern colonies and virtually guarantee the independence of the fledgling United States. A victory for the British would pave the way for the conquest of North Carolina and Virginia. After nearly an hour of frenzied, bloody combat, the British army emerged victorious, and American morale plummeted to its lowest point of the war. The rout at Camden was not a total loss, however, as Patriot forces eventually came away with a renewed determination to resist British advances, and the lessons from the defeat were applied to secure future victories that finally allowed the Patriots to triumph in the South. This engaging new book presents the Battle of Camden as never before: through the eyes and words of American and British participants and contemporary observers. The events leading up to the conflict, the combat itself and the consequences of Camden are all described in striking detail. The cunning strategies of both American Major General Horatio Gates and British Lieutenant General Lord Cornwallis are revealed, as are a number of battlefield reports from soldiers on both sides. In addition to these compelling firsthand accounts, The Battle of Camden includes analysis of the battle and its effects in America and Europe from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Lord George Germain. With this landmark text, author and historian Jim Piecuch offers a comprehensive consideration of a vital Revolutionary battle and its effects on the war for American independence.

Apr 12, 2012 - usa is the biggest mistake in history. They lied to everyone in usa.How many of you played Total War games? The colonies tossed a fit about "TAXATION" and so on. The real war was against France. The colonies would still be Commonwealth if the twoefaters werent alcoholics and sleeping with other guys wives the entire time (Joe Smith).
DarkPrinceNH5570 Says:
Apr 12, 2012 - Wasnt just taxation. They were mad about Great Britain being in the "NEW WORLD" and so on.You were at war with France and Spain was here too down south. WTF? Great Britain didnt even send all of their military to the new world either. So usa should consider itself lucky.I cant believe the Mesopotamians (Native indians) sided with the INVADERs. They were all invaders but you sided with the wrong ones.

FcK2420 Says:
Apr 14, 2012 - So what kept people from just forming massive skirmish armies? Also why not lie down?
Royalfork1 Says:
Apr 14, 2012 - The lack of modern comms equipment, and the fact that battlefields were easily obscured by the the smoke produced my muskets(smokeless powder was not around until the 1800s) would make a all skirmish army and organizational nightmare. Additionally they would not be able to put out that much fire power(undisciplined firing with smooth bore muskets wont cause much damage) thus making them vulnerable to infantry columns and the fact that they would be all spread out means vulnerability to cavalry.
Royalfork1 Says:
Apr 14, 2012 - and as for lieing down, it is extremely difficult to reload a muzzle loading weapon like a musket while in the prone position.
FcK2420 Says:
Apr 15, 2012 - Stand behind hill and reload, move to top of hill and lie down to shoot?

Apr 17, 2012 - Did we have baker rifles by then ( I read sharpe books) as we could of possibly won if we had better equipment , granted the 3000 mile journey
ya12ify Says:
Apr 21, 2012 - No Baker rifles unfortunately. There were some civilian longrifles being used, as well as Jeager rifles used by the Hessians, and the Ferguson rifle was in use with small British regiments.

May 19, 2012 - That guy had some good luck if the cannonball hit the guy next to him just as he moved.
mbBoyce Says:
May 22, 2012 - That is not at all how the battle of Camden looked. It was fought in swamp and woods, mostly at night during the firght for position and then in the morning for the main clash which easily routed the militia and left the French allies to die... and of course the British dragoons chased down and slaughtered the fleeing men for twenty miles, cutting them down with their swords and shooting them in the back.
mbBoyce Says:
May 22, 2012 - There was very little open ground, if any, and no plantation houses in view of the combat. Most all the bodies still lay in the swamp and woods and the roads north to this day. Left to rot.
XJokerekoP Says:
May 24, 2012 - Imagine if this war never happened. Like what if the Americans said " we want independence " and the British are like " sure, yeah whatever ". The End.
