Title: Discovering Anna May Wong
Added: Feb 5, 2007
Author: Danwei
Duration: 9:56
Description:
In this episode of Sexy Beijing, Su Fei explores the life of the sexiest Chinese American woman ever to grace the silver screen: Anna May Wong (黄柳霜).Born to a Chinese laundryman's family in 1905 in Los Angeles, she went on to become a Hollywood icon in a career that started in 1919 and went on till the 1960s. Her career and personal life suffered because of California's anti-miscegenation laws. Despite this, she had a mixed reception in China where many people criticized her for bringing shame upon Chinese people in a way reminiscent of the treatment Zhang Ziyi sometimes gets at home, despite her popularity abroad.Graham Russel Gao Hodges is the author of a recent book about her called Anna May Wong: From Laundryman's Daughter to Hollywood Legend. This episode of Sexy Beijing is an interview by Su Fei with Professor Hodges. You can buy Hodges' book on Amazon or at The Bookworm if you're in Beijing. A number of her films are available on DVD; search for 'Anna May Wong' on Amazon.http://danwei.orgSexy Beijing is now on its own website: check the latest episodes athttp://www.sexybeijing.tv

tlyoung88 Says:
Apr 29, 2009 - She wasn't even considered to play lead in The Good Earth because Asians couldn't play romantic leads with white men. So they cast a Hungarian Luise Rainer, and she won the Oscar for it.tony young
kronoscorvinus Says:
May 14, 2009 - I haven't read his book but Professor Chan's book "Perpetually Cool: The Life of Anna May Wong" is quite intreresting, esp. as it's written from an Chinese American's viewpoint. He has a quite good Filmography. If you can watch only a couple of Anna's movie's:"Picadilly" (silent), "The Thief of Baghdad" (silent) and "Chu Chin Chow" 1934 British, avail w/ commentary on Amazon. An extremely underappreciated LA GIRL who, like many LA Girls made Hollywood what it is today.

tunein Says:
Oct 24, 2009 - China didn't like Anna and by the same token China today dooesn't like someone like Zhang Ziyi. She is considered a disgrace to Chinese for dating a white man. So this idiot on video shouldn't be too hard on American hollywood at the time as racist. America was really no more racist than other culture in those days. They just were big enough to be famous for it. Chinese today are increasingly having to change their attitudes as well about a lot of things they aren't historically accustomed to.

Feb 5, 2010 - It's a shame that great actors like her are forgotten by ignorance and evil. She's tremendously wonderful and a powerful, strong woman who was able to go through all that horrible crap put to her by racist directors and laws and still fulfil her dreams.

Feb 24, 2011 - Despite after all these years, Hollywood is still not giving Asian actors and actresses enough decent roles that are not stereotypical etc....and...one's own people will always try to criticise and bring down othersAnna May Wong is just great. My salute to you. You are a true Chinese!

Jul 6, 2011 - I got a bit worried by the intro, but this actually ended up being a very good and interesting clip on Anna May Wong. Thanks for posting.

Dec 2, 2011 - She still had more opportunites, more good things in her life than most people, More important, she had the character/spirit/drive to push ahead in spite of the ignorance that surrounded her. Brave and lovely woman.
Onlymusical Says:
Feb 6, 2012 - She was a fantastic actress, accomplishing the impossible my overshadowing Marlene Dietrich in "Shanghai Express," a von Sternberg picture tailored for Dietrich in which Wong played a supporting role and took every scene she was in. I've read this guy's book and while he has no flair for writing (he writes like a professor, in other words), it's an informative study of a wonderful woman.
Onlymusical Says:
Feb 6, 2012 - Imagine it being illegal for a man to marry a Chinese woman. How gut-wrenchingly stupid and nasty.

Mar 18, 2009 - Excellent documentary! I really enjoyed watching it. It's such a shame that she died so young.
