Apr 18, 2011 - you know what youre talking about...but only people with an electronic background will understand what you just did....the 555 timer is a great general purpose IC...but you probably lost 128000 of your views cause you gave them a project and introduction to electronics in one swoop....

Aug 5, 2011 - a regulator is more efficient and takes up way less space.

Nov 18, 2011 - if you hook up a regulator bakcwards it creates alot of heat and it can give you a 2nd degree burn
theycallhimdan Says:
Nov 28, 2011 - actually, a regulator is no more efficient than using a resistor divider to lower the supply voltage. it works in essentially the same way, only the resistance in the regulator is a transistor which can vary its resistance to insure that the output voltage stays steady for any load current.

Mar 26, 2012 - Can I use the 555 timer chip to turn on or off a motor with a time delay of about 5 seconds or less? I'm looking for the best application for a to turn on a motor when an object is detected, and turn off the motor when the object is not their. Any help is really appreciated.
Maclman1 Says:
Apr 2, 2012 - you are talking about a complex circuit. a 555 would not be useful, if u are turning it off as soon as it is undetected. how are tring to detect an object?
nyifan89 Says:
Apr 2, 2012 - Im a detecting the object using infrared sensor (such as a photoelectric sensor). The photoelectric sensor will trip a relay and fire the motor. I want to some how wire in a timer chip to tell the motor to remain on for about 5 seconds. Thanks.
Maclman1 Says:
Apr 16, 2012 - you would want to put a monostable circuit, the trigger being the sensor. The output would go to the relay. regardless if the sensor is still active or not, 5 seconds later it will shut off. use a google rc time constant calculator for the 5 second timing
