The children were trying to collect the brass shell casings at the range to sell for scrap metal. When a 10-year-old Afghan boy darted under a vehicle, Weichel climbed under and pushed him to safety. Then the huge vehicle ran over Weichel, killing him.

BTW AFGHAN witness in the village are saying this was a coordinated mission by several soldiers. They state that there were 2 helicopters hovering over heard during the whole killing spree, soldiers wearing lights on their helmets - as many as 15 soldiers.
