Title: The Reach ~ Dan Fogelberg [ CC ]

Added: Mar 18, 2009

Author: JMEagle101

Duration: 6:17

Description:
"In 1978 I purchased an old sea captain's house on an island in Maine. I became (and still am) completely enraptured with the sea. Summer in Maine is always special but in autumn when the tourists retreat and an island returns to its quiet, isolated existence is when I find it most endearing. I dearly love this song." (Dan Fogelberg)" The Reach " written by Singer/Songwriters Dan Fogelberg, from "The Innocent Age" album (1981). R.I.P. Dan, thank you for the beautiful everlasting music! Thank you Amy for the Minstrel photo link, special thank to Bobby for liner notes and to many artists/photographers for their beautiful pictures and portraits of Maine!(Lyrics)It's Maine, and it's Autumn, the birches have just begun turningIt's life and it's dyingThe lobstermen's boats come returning with the catch of the day in their holdsAnd the young boy is cold and complainingThe fog meets the beaches and out on the Reach it is rainingIt's father and son, it's the way it's been done since the old daysIt's hauling by hand ten miles out from the land where their chow waitsAnd the days are all lonely and long and the seas grow so stormy and strong but...The Reach will sing welcome as homeward they hurry along(Chorus)And the morning will blow away as the waves crash and fallAnd the Reach like a siren sings as she beckons and callsAs the coastline recedes from view and the seas swell and rollI will take from the Reach all that she has to teach to the depths of my soulThe wind brings a chill, there's a frost on the sill in the morningIt creeps through the doorOn the edge of the shore ice is formingSoon the northers will bluster and blowAnd the woods will be whitened with snowfallAnd the Reach will lie frozen for the lost and unchosen to row(Chorus)

Jul 12, 2011 - This is one of Dan's best, hands down. No wonder he openly admitted he was proud of it. I've been a writer since childhood and have never produced anything this beautiful! Dan was in a class by himself!

Jul 24, 2011 - If any songwriters want to know how to do it, listen to Fogelberg. More than outstanding.

AdrianMornen Says:

Sep 24, 2011 - I love this song and Dan Fogelberg, however, the sadness underlying the melody is what I feel when I think about Maine - it is both a paradise and a prison. I've lived my whole 16 years here, and although I love the coast and land, I have never been an accepted member of the state's tight clans, still quite alive in Down East Maine. I am an "outsider" I suppose, and being left on the outside of something your entire life is not a very nice feeling.

Oct 15, 2011 - What a wonderful tribute you have made to a wonderful song and talented man! Thank You so much. RIP, Dan..you will forever be missed but live on in your music.

Nov 2, 2011 - The intricacy of the rhymes is amazing. And you can hear the ocean in it. I could never live far from the ocean, or for long outside of New England, and this song says why.

KevMaddick Says:

Nov 11, 2011 - Totally agree...awesome artist...brings back great memories

JMEagle101 Says:

Mar 5, 2012 - Dan's lyrics and melodies have inspired me to come forward to create tribute videos to him after his passing, and I am glad I have done it and accomplished many. May his timeless music and boundless love continue to heal us through the toughest times, bring joy and happiness to you and stays in our hearts for ever on... God bless you always!

Mar 23, 2012 - I lived in Kittery when I was stationed at Pease Air Force Base back in 1977-79. They were the two loneliest years of my life for the very same reason you stated. I am a southern man and found Maine to be a bit of a culture shock. I totally relate to what you are saying AdrianMornen. I hope you find the needed acceptance in your life soon.Peace and Love to you AdrianMornen.
