Muay Boran (Thai: มวยโบราณ, lit. "ancient boxing") is an umbrella term for the unarmed martial arts of Thailand prior to the introduction of modern equipment and rules. It is the ancestor of modern Muay Thai. The word muay which means boxing comes from the Sanskrit term mavya, while boran or boraan means ancient in Thai. The art is significantly different from its modern descendent. Whereas Muay Thai is often called the "science of eight limbs", muay boran is said to make use of nawa awut which means nine weapons and refers to the hands, legs, elbows, knees and head.

Mar 9, 2011 - This is blocking Muay Boran Chaiyuth style. They are quite similar to blocks performed in other martial arts; you see how they all are related to each other. You won´t see the blocks in modern muay thai, which is tought for competition.

Oct 7, 2011 - It is Muay Thai, dude. This is ancient Muay Thai, not the sport variety. The fact that the techniques look like the forms from wushu, karate, and taekwondo only speaks to all of those styles having a common ancestry, not to the lack of authenticity.

Apr 7, 2012 - You know, in karate there are elbow and knees thechniques and I imagine that if you would see that you would say something like "it is muay thai not karate". Muay Thai is older then karate, kung fu and especially wushu, and Muay Boran is the oldest, ancient for of Muay Thai and those moves were already there.
