What they want you to think is either the publisher had two daughters, one French one English ( Julia and Julie) and all that stuff actually happened or Sarah Morton was staying with the publisher's British daughter Julia (the good one) and JULIE ( the naughty one) is just a figment of her imagination, a made up character for her book that stands for what she wants to be.

We discover it only at the end when we see that the Julie she wrote about is not the real Julie. Another option less likely is that the Julie is really an impostor, but this is very unlikely. .
