Title: The Story of Broke (2011)
Added: Nov 7, 2011
Author: storyofstuffproject
Duration: 8:7
Description:
http://bit.ly/storyofbroke — The United States isn't broke; we're the richest country on the planet and a country in which the richest among us are doing exceptionally well. But the truth is, our economy is broken, producing more pollution, greenhouse gasses and garbage than any other country. In these and so many other ways, it just isn't working. But rather than invest in something better, we continue to keep this 'dinosaur economy' on life support with hundreds of billions of dollars of our tax money. The Story of Broke calls for a shift in government spending toward investments in clean, green solutions—renewable energy, safer chemicals and materials, zero waste and more—that can deliver jobs AND a healthier environment. It's time to rebuild the American Dream; but this time, let's build it better.

May 13, 2012 - The American Dream was built off of capitalism or the free market, work hard and reep the benefits, not by being handed money from the government
theVIIStar Says:
May 13, 2012 - yum. frackalicious. i love lighting my tap on fire and drinking carcinogen laden water. not to mention eating sick, mutated fish from the gulf and breathing smoggy air.i don't doubt that the us has resources, what we need are clean alternatives so we don't destroy our only tiny home adrift in the vast void of space. you can blow tar sands and frack shale, but what does that mean for life on this world?
TheFlyingGreenMonkey Says:
May 13, 2012 - Actually 1% pay roughly 1/3 of income taxes and the top 5% does a slight majority of the income tax.
NeatNetwork Says:
May 13, 2012 - People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.
SamuelJackson69 Says:
May 14, 2012 - The National Debt is $15.72+ Trillion. To say we are not broke would be the biggest crock ever. This is Liberal propaganda, nothing more.
keski2011 Says:
May 14, 2012 - When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.
noprofitmaximierung Says:
May 14, 2012 - When the government is the people, there's socialism.
keski2011 Says:
May 14, 2012 - Well I don't think the people (sheeple) are the government in america.
TheRazorHound Says:
May 14, 2012 - @NeatNetwork the government is made of people, anon. Paradox bitch.
noprofitmaximierung Says:
May 14, 2012 - That is quite natural when a minority own the majority of that society's wealth. Wealth = Power, and if the people give up their labor and production to their boss and a few oligarchs, they indeed are reduced to sheeple. This tragic part of Human history of Classes will not last too long though, kings, lords and the rest liquidated and only one leeching class left to go...
ColoradoGarrett Says:
May 14, 2012 - I agree that the government is broken but she really needs to give numbers graphs and facts, not speculation
keski2011 Says:
May 15, 2012 - Agreed.
ChequeSquad Says:
May 15, 2012 - What about the debt we owe to China and all the other countries? 15 Trillion, isn't it? Also, "voting them out" doesn't work; because they'll just rig the election like they did it '04 with Bush.
vivlevivle Says:
May 17, 2012 - WHAT ABOUT ENTITLEMENTS!!!!!!!
syko82 Says:
May 19, 2012 - Assumes you can un-corrupt government easily...
VP89898 Says:
May 19, 2012 - Psychology has its roots in 100% solid evil. To treat "hysteria", a "disease" which does not "exist" anymore, , with a "symptom" of not wanting to have sex, doctors invented the dildo and then forced orgasms in married women. Psychology is not science. It has been responsible for thousands of deaths through experimental lobotomy. Please Find The Truth. With God All Things Are Possible.Faith is the Key.
mmille10 Says:
May 19, 2012 - In some aspects it is, but in the main, you're right. The government "is the people" in the sense that all of the people in the government have the same capacity to do good or bad as any of us do, not just in their personal lives, but in the polices they create and enforce. But the government is not "the people" in the sense that it can do lots of things that citizens are not allowed to do. You and I can't arrest someone and put them in jail. We can't charge anyone a tax, etc.
mmille10 Says:
May 19, 2012 - Agreed. She left out the biggest part of the budget. She mentions them in passing (with the threat that they're going to be cut). Everything she talked about was discretionary, which is the part that's shrinking, and is the least of the budget problem, while entitlements, and interest on federal debt gradually eat the budget alive. Even if everything she said were done, it would delay the fiscal crisis that's coming a bit, but wouldn't avert it.
mmille10 Says:
May 19, 2012 - This repeats the same liberal argument I've heard since forever: "If only the government would spend the money on the *right* things, everything would be better." The truth of the matter is the government spends money on some things that contribute to our society. They usually don't get noticed, because they don't get publicity, and can be difficult for the public to understand. There's a lot of public money spent on services that would be handled by the private sector more efficiently.
mmille10 Says:
May 19, 2012 - The only way to make the waste smaller is to make the budget smaller. The reason there's government waste is it has no economic incentives of its own. It only has political incentives. Money is just a means to a political end, for the government.
Niggbo Says:
May 22, 2012 - Islamic terrorism is very serous and needs to be fought. Nothing but theocratic fascist that wish to destroy secularism. However, I agree with cutting oil subsidies and not paying for people messes
Niggbo Says:
May 22, 2012 - mutha fucka you shut the fuck up. We own your ass. You keep fucking paying us or we gonna collect mutha fucka. You keep paying your taxes bitch. and stop talking shit the communist government of china is watching everything you ameircan mutha fuckas say.You know why we do what we do?we do it for CHAIRMAN MOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WE DO IT FOR CHAIRMAN MOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
diadora74 Says:
May 24, 2012 - At 0.5% of the budget I'd say it's money well spent.
itonner231 Says:
May 25, 2012 - I agree with Anne Leonard as far as consumerism and the waste spent on wars. However, she is misleading people with this portrayal. Her claim in Story of stuff about 50% defense spending is simply false. Entitlements are twice the size of defense and will balloon out of control. Look at social security trustee report and budget breakdown for proof. Please at least listen and be open to counter-arguments such as the "Story of Broke, The Critique" by HowTheWorldWorks

jpazda21 Says:
May 13, 2012 - President Obama has given subsidize to these safe and renewable resources, and newsflash, they have not been creating new jobs, but they have been going bankrupt.
