May 17, 2012 - I think it's because...A) The album is loaded with hit singles which, justifiably, performed very well.2) The videos for the singles were truly, "short films" as Jackson said. This would be cool today, but imagine how awesome it was at a time when music videos were groundbreaking and new! People had never experienced music like that before.3) The early 80s, musically, were pretty barren. The public was hungry for a phenomenon to come along.4) His performing abilities.5) Quincy Jones

May 20, 2012 - MJ x motown 25 anniversary x thriller short film x dawn of MTVnewly born MTV was only showing rock (white) acts at the time, jackson was the only black face singing and dancing for main stream america to see. just like rap today, middle class america ate it up. with the debut of the moonwalk, everyone in america knew who he was. and with thriller video dropping a full 2 years after the album's release, people everywhere simply had to have their own copy.
