http://europa.eu/50/news/article/070914_mobility_en.htmThe bicycle is still having trouble imposing itself in the European urban environment. Getting around town on a bike can be a real battle. Sep 17, 2007 - Cool project. I agree very much with the efforts to make cities more bicycle friendly. However, at the same time it must also be ensured that the cyclists do respect the traffic rules. Otherwise, it quickly becomes dangerous, not only for the cyclists themselves, but also the pedestrians and car drivers.

Sep 18, 2007 - Fabio - just look who posted this piece of drivel. The EU has done what it can to makre public transportation more expensive, opened the borders for east european truck wrecks and - if you read the traffic white book - called for massive investments in more road building. (Oh yes, and Barroso drives a SUV). This is like having a prostitute talking about chastity.

leon187 Says:

Sep 19, 2007 - it would be great if more people would get involved in this movement, because in lithuania, we still have car dominated culture and lifestyle

mredgrove Says:

Sep 19, 2007 - I think the initiative is excellent and well overdue. As someone who cycles on average 125km per week, I believe that cities in particular have a responsibility to provide the facilities to do so in a safer environment. By the way, I do my 125km in Brussels, so called capital of Europe, where Belgian motorists pay scant regard to anything outside the perimeter of their car, be they cyclists, pedestrians or other 'objects'! Come on Brussels, wake up!

atomheartfather Says:

Sep 19, 2007 - Yes, good project. And yes, cyclists should learn the rules. But her in the UK the bigger problem is how these traffic rules get interpreted by car drivers. The traffic laws most conducive to encouraging cycling are those which give cyclistspriority - in traffic rules terms - over motorised traffic. When, as in the UK, traffic law is interpreted as the exact opposite, we have a major problem that has to be addressed politically, by the likes of Critical Mass Rides.

paddy227 Says:

Sep 19, 2007 - Yeah!I once saw a cyclist go through a red light and he hit a truck which exploded... the driver only just got away.....traffic lights were invented for motorised congestion...

fabio9913 Says:

Sep 19, 2007 - Victor, how does the EU make public transport more expensive? Please elaborate. Cheers!

Aurys14 Says:

Sep 20, 2007 - Vilnius is the best! ;)

ardenro Says:

Sep 20, 2007 - It's good project, I'm from Bucharest and i love to take my bike on a ride, but the pollution here is heavy. You can barely breath while on the bike close to the big roads. Hope this is just the begining and the best part is here to come.

Soloren2001 Says:

Sep 24, 2007 - In Paris we have "Velib" which is great however:1. Bike should have lanes on sidewalks (like in Germany) and not on roads.2. Promoting bikes does not mean that it should replace cars as the Paris mayor believes!3. "Velib" is awesome except for the fact that bikes need better breaks and tires (also some stations are rapidly empty of bikes while other stations are full and cannot accept bike return!).

aimwn Says:

Oct 4, 2007 - In Athens Greece, the situation is much worse. Pedestrians have no rights, the car drivers are living no space for the others and of course there are no bike lanes. Cars should be banned from the center of the city and also the State must give more attention to the mass means of transportation...!

dominican1000 Says:

Oct 16, 2007 - well thats in Athens

dominican1000 Says:

Oct 16, 2007 - World! start doing this kind of things! please help stop global warming!

mimi2345678 Says:

Nov 2, 2007 - omg, EUROPEAN UNION you are the best..but,, wow i am shocked European people are retarded........poor people!

SamanthasPassion Says:

Nov 3, 2007 - Yet another reason I'd love to live in Europe...US cities are just too spread out for this kind of thing, and less bike friendly.

ComradeRed2020 Says:

Nov 14, 2007 - I often use the bike to ride to my university or at weekends for some practice. I only use a car, when I go shopping or travel far. Public transport is in most of EU excellent as well and is more environment friendly thank cars!

luv4knowledge Says:

Nov 26, 2007 - This is a great way to keep the air clean; but it's not realistic in the US wehre most people work very far away from their homes.

AegisLow Says:

Dec 9, 2007 - even if i worked only 5km from home i'd still use my car... most people would.

sunnyjoe66 Says:

Jan 11, 2009 - In Ireland and Britain the Cycle Paths are still to narrow we would like it to be like the Netherlands with Segregated Cyclleways of at least 2 1/2 Metres or 7 1/2Feet Unidirectional .The Governments are promising much but are still to Motorist Biased and are just Playing around with giving us better Infrastructure. The Netherlands is the Country we should aspire to for best practice.

ricardolb Says:

Feb 15, 2009 - i bet you are fat!

hoegg Says:

Jul 20, 2009 - Copenhagen is the best cycle city in the world, thats it...

fedfan1234 Says:

Oct 9, 2009 - Some people are so negative, if we can do it in the Netherlands and I mean everywhere in a large city or small town I do not see any reason why the US or UK would be any different. Furthermore it does not have to be perfect, because from what I have seen it can only improve. Also look at it from a different perspective, would it not be better for cars if cyclists would not bother you on the road? Also it is not only about going to work by bike. People can go Shopping, gym, go to friends etc.

ilovenature21 Says:

Dec 6, 2009 - Riding a bike is fun !

sweetsmile493 Says:

May 23, 2010 - This shows how behind America is.. Europe is going to be the leader of cleaner energy...
