Jan 11, 2012 - what is this, country? folk? pop? blues? im guessing its all of those. whatever it is a paints a picture which gets worse as the song goes on and just when you thinks its finished she goes and punches you in the stomach. and also, what was billy jo and that girl throwin off the bridge?

Bobbiesue83 Says:

Jan 11, 2012 - I've always liked this song. I grew up listening to it cause my mom always played it. I told her that I would never ever listen to country music and once I got out on my own I listen to it and I had an accoustic guitar. I guess in that sense I wanted to be like Bobbie Gentry

Jan 24, 2012 - the *94* dislikes want this to be over produced and synthesized....great music!!!!!!!

TheBarbjo Says:

Jan 24, 2012 - @gregkelsliz I know the person above said the movie showed them dropping a rag doll, but the whole mystery of the song was that you never knew precisely what they'd dropped off the bridge--it's left to your imagination.

TheBarbjo Says:

Jan 24, 2012 - I never loved this song, but it's very nostalgic hearing it. I realize it is now a meaningful piece of my history, since I just referenced it today, telling a friend I felt that she and I were on the Tallahatchee bridge together :D

Jan 26, 2012 - goosebumps on top of goosebumps....... had never heard anything like this back then. DARK!

grindlbebe Says:

Jan 29, 2012 - The Smothers Brothers was the greatest show in the history of television. None mattered more.

JoshuaTaylor Says:

Jan 30, 2012 - I've always thought that Stevie Nicks should cover this song...Anyone REALLY know what this song is about ?I suspect there's not enough info to go on...But, I'd wager it's about an abortion gone wrong...Maybe, ;-)

Randell646 Says:

Feb 1, 2012 - @JoshuaTaylor There's a movie, by the same title. This was the theme song. It's about a boy that has a homosexual experience, and can't deal with it, afterwards, so he commits suicide.

JoshuaTaylor Says:

Feb 1, 2012 - @Randell646 Yeah, Randell....I've seen it. (Although, a LONG time ago !) IMO, they went WAY off the rails and just turned it into another 70's exploitation movie. I don't think it has a thing to do with homosexuality, (although I;m sure that sold tickets at the time...)Perhaps, at the end of analysis, Bobbie was right. There was too much left out of the lyrics to draw any actual conclusions,But, there must be *something^ to it as it's been fascinating people for over 4 decades. now..

MrRaiderfan1000 Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - I remember seeing this on the TV. I was 11 y/o and big sisters and her girl friends were all watching the show dressed like that, you know.... The hair, mini skirts.. and just thinking how hot they were!

SupernaturalXtreme Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - there is a studio outtake from elvis and in it he sings a line of it, in his unique blues style, too bad he only sang one line.

LucasGoldberg Says:

Feb 5, 2012 - This song and Bobbie's presentation are what I call a "leveller". A suicide is treated casually by 3 members of the family, while it is hitting at the heart of the 4th member. "wipe your feet" and "5 acres to plow" lose their meaning in the light of what Billie Joe has done and what it is doing to this young girl. When I hear this song, my worries evaporate and I know there are more important things that I can put my energy into. Thank you Bobbie Gentry.
