May 13, 2012 - Why make negative comments about people coming to this song via Ghost World? Like Enid in the movie, young people have to discover great music somehow. When I discovered it, in my early teens in 1960, it was in booths on headphones listening to vinyl - we didn't have brilliant indie movies, or YouTube either. Plus Ghost World is a wonderful film, LOL funny, profound at the same time, and a great tribute to the blues. Here's a Top 40 for all young GhostWorlders to pick more from on YouTube.

May 16, 2012 - When music had purpose and meaning....

bluesman1929 Says:

May 18, 2012 - Thanks. It won't be a lifetime - couple of weeks and you'll be searching out more of this great stuff. By the way, those on the list with the year shown after them was to make sure that anyone using the list chose the right version. I think all of them are on YouTube - thanks mainly to uploader Ragtime Dorian Henry - brilliant guy. I have only found one true classic which is not on Youtube - Sippie Wallace's "Parlor Social Deluxe". Come on, Ragtime Dorian - get it up there!

bluesman1929 Says:

May 18, 2012 - Yes, indeedy!!

bravetherainbow Says:

May 19, 2012 - I don't even know what Ghost World is but I love this guy's voice!

bluesman1929 Says:

May 19, 2012 - It's one of the best recent American films. It's a great tribute to the real Blues. It's a commentary on the decline of our civilisation cleverly disguised as a teen movie. Its for those who love geeks and nerds of the best type. It's for teenagers (and adults) who see through all the horseshit of today and the phoney bohemian losers who listen to crap music and think their cool. It's for those who love real music, and who love watching Thora Birch with green hair soaking up Skip James.

bravetherainbow Says:

May 19, 2012 - Hmm, the phrase "real music" and its connotations really don't appeal to me at all but I think I remember the movie now. It's got Steve Buscemi in it, right? I've seen a scene from it before.

bluesman1929 Says:

May 20, 2012 - Right."Real music"? Yes, the phrase is inadequate - it's hard to describe good art in words. You know it when you hear it. Most people hear it in this song; which doesn't mean it's always profound - it can just be fun. Certainly real music is always authentic. It's never manufactured, image driven or trend chasing. It's not on YouTube lists of mop-haired "Greatest Guitar Players Ever" - hence no Django Reinhardt, even though he was. As I say, it's not easy to put magic into words.

bravetherainbow Says:

May 20, 2012 - I didn't mean it's inadequate, it's just meaningless to me. How can you tell if music is "real" or not? Music is music. All music is real. Maybe some music is made more for artistic reasons and some for entertainment, and some just for the hell of it, but it seems presumptuous to think you can immediately recognise the intention behind music just from the way it sounds.

tlinn101 Says:

May 21, 2012 - In my humble opinion.....Art is something we create that inspires emotion.

bravetherainbow Says:

May 21, 2012 - Sure, I guess I'd agree with that...

bluesman1929 Says:

May 22, 2012 - All music may be real in the sense that you mean "real". I meant it, as I think was clear, in the sense of genuine, authentic, true. And I agree with tlinn 101, above all that means in the conveying of authentic emotion. When a young person encounters Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson etc for the first time and posts something like "Wow, this is the real deal" - we know what they mean. I like hamburgers. I eat them occasionally, and they are just right sometimes..Not real food, though.

bravetherainbow Says:

May 22, 2012 - Why aren't they real food? I assume you're talking about McDonald's hamburgers or something, but even then... They're made from real, authentic, genuine, true dead plants and animals. By "real" do you mean "unprocessed"? Because that would be a whole lot more clear of a word to use.

bravetherainbow Says:

May 22, 2012 - Authentic, genuine and true are just as meaningless to me in this context as "real". "Conveying real emotion" is a bit more meaningful but still pretty hard for me to judge... I don't know what Skip was thinking or feeling when he was writing and playing this song. "Appearing to convey real emotion" may be more accurate but that seems very subjective. By "the horses*** of today" do you mean all contemporary popular music, or what?

xyhmo Says:

May 23, 2012 - trying not to say it... trying... trying. oh hell! GHOST WORLD

bluesman1929 Says:

May 24, 2012 - I'm beginning to think you've got too much time on your hands.

bravetherainbow Says:

May 24, 2012 - Point taken, I'll do my best to find some more music that's actual real music rather than some mysterious other thing.

bluesman1929 Says:

May 25, 2012 - Haha! In that case, may I recommend my Top 40? Guaranteed 100 per cent unprocessed. For unique voices try 3, 5, 8, 11, 13, 15 and 29.

thSubliminalCriminal Says:

May 26, 2012 - Thora Birch is a terrible terrible actress
