Complete video with Q&A at: http://fora.tv/2010/05/22/Adam_Savage_Presents_Problem_Solving_How_I_Do_ItBest known as co-host of Discovery Channel's MythBusters, Adam Savage also wears hats as an artist, actor, special effects wizard and industrial designer. In this presentation at Maker Faire Bay Area 2010, he outlines his strategies for tackling complex problems.-----This program was recorded in collaboration with Maker Faire Bay Area, on May 22, 2010.Adam Savage has spent his life gathering skills that allow him to take what's in his brain and make it real. He's built everything from ancient Buddhas to futuristic weapons, from spaceships to dancing vegetables, from fine art sculptures to animated chocolate and just about anything else you can think of. Since 1993, Adam has concentrated on the special-effects industry, honing his skills through more than 100 television commercials and a dozen feature films, including Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace and Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Galaxy Quest, Terminator 3, A.I. and the Matrix sequels. He's also designed props and sets for Coca-Cola, Hershey's, Lexus and a host of New York and San Francisco theater companies. Not only has he worked and consulted in the research and development division for toy companies and made several short films, but Adam has also acted in several films and commercials -- including a Charmin ad, in which he played Mr. Whipple's stock boy, and a Billy Joel music video, "Second Wind," in which he drowns. Today, in addition to co-hosting Discovery Channel's MythBusters, Adam teaches advanced model making, most recently in the industrial design department at the San Francisco Academy of Art. Somehow he also finds time to devote to his own art. His sculptures have been showcased in over 40 shows in San Francisco, New York and Charleston, W.Va.

Jan 24, 2012 - I've got a lot of respect for this guy. As a 23 year old recent college graduate, I'm kind of trying to figure out what direction I want to take in life (and I'm pretty sure I want to avoid the mundane corporate grind). My strength is in music, writing, and problem solving, and I love to travel. Anybody have any advice for a guy like me?
raider2661 Says:
Jan 24, 2012 - You ca tell he's really passionate about what he does, and that's awesome! At this point in my life, I'm hoping I can find a career that I can be passionate about.

Feb 1, 2012 - Great guy. Lame audience.

Feb 20, 2012 - Hey man, you should consider the film industry. I started back in high school working with a few local commercials being filmed, and moved on to working some large budget motion pictures and music videos. It's an industry comprised of many many talented and fast-paced individuals who live to solve problems and test their own abilities. It's stressful, but you'll never find another environment where you can learn more in a weeks time than most people do in seven years.

Mar 24, 2012 - I'm more towards Electronics and Computer Science. But I'm on the same boat.

Apr 2, 2012 - The audience probably wasn't mic'ed which is likely why it sounds like they're not really responding to him.

Apr 15, 2012 - I love what he says at the end of this video about that sad moment when the task is complete. I am like him in the way that our joy comes from the process, not the end result.

Apr 19, 2012 - Knowing what you want brings you closer to knowing what to do. Do you know more definitively what you want (vs. what you don't want). Just a question. I wish you well.

devibeatrack Says:
Apr 29, 2012 - I'd watch James Hyneman how he solves problems. Adam Savage likes to talk - and the more someone likes it the more it is clear that such a person screws up when showing what one can do - since the competence of talking leads to what I call a "brain drain" - if one focuses on one thing the neural mapping for this area will evolve - while at the same time the other areas of the neural mapping will shrivel.
devibeatrack Says:
Apr 29, 2012 - Just look at who Savage's mother (psychotherapist) and his father (painter, filmmaker, animator) were and you realize that his self-confidence is based on the myth that he made it all by himself and it absolutely didn't have anything to do with his economic background... All he does is small-talk - basically he tries to keep up the myth that everyone who tries can achieve the same (what exactly did he achieve for others which is not only optional - just as MB - ?).
isprekken Says:
May 2, 2012 - You're saying is that because Adam Savage can speak to an audience he must not be proficient at anything else? You make yourself sound like someone who's playing at psychology without knowing a thing about it. You also ask what he does for others-- your altruism is admirable, but you will always be wasting your time in projecting it onto others. In short, your criticisms will gain you nothing, and make you seem ignorant and hateful. I hope you can resist making such commentaries in the future.
devibeatrack Says:
May 3, 2012 - Why would I gain something? That's your mental illness which you call capitalism. I am happy with not having to work, having enough to eat, somewhere to take a shower, somewhere to sleep, a computer, learning physics every day without ever having to apply it - and to make fun of those who have to go to work - which I will not do in ...
devibeatrack Says:
May 3, 2012 - ...a country which produces weapons or weapon components. I am interested in sucking on such a country - since a country which produces weapons and sells its bullshit about others being terrorists - it doesn't deserve better.
devibeatrack Says:
May 3, 2012 - Savage has to do all those Shenannigans because he needs the amount of money and he needed to find a woman this way...something that I neglect as inferior things. Women are fine - but relationships are an inferor thing: they're all based ...
devibeatrack Says:
May 3, 2012 - ...on fear. Money - up to a certain limit it's okay - everything beyond that is as if not having any money at all. Altruism? Has nothing to do with it: it's the question why people get paid for not doing anything at all for others - while being a nurse is a suckjob - nurses obviously do not take enough care about their own profits - which is wrong. i wouldn't mind if savage and people like him get neutralized - since they're the real suckers of society.
devibeatrack Says:
May 3, 2012 - to fix a nation it's not the right path to do what's right and to get as few as possible - it's necessary to destabilize the system by doing the same as the others do. only this leads to a system where the followers of the original suckers will act differently - and not suck so much any more. a plant that's supposed to be stong - has to be cut back every now and then.
cerberus144 Says:
May 16, 2012 - Nor did he manage to injure himself.
