Title: Fault Lines - Mexico: Impunity and profits

Added: Jun 11, 2011

Author: AlJazeeraEnglish

Duration: 24:33

Description:
Once known as a booming industrial city and a model of economic progress in Mexico, the border city of Juarez has become infamous as the murder capital of the world. More than 8,000 people have been killed there since 2008, when Mexican President Felipe Calderon sent in the army to carry out his offensive against the drug cartels. The official story is that the Sinaloa and Juarez cartels are fighting for the city and the access it provides to the multi-billion dollar US drug market only a few hundred metres away. On this episode of Fault Lines, Josh Rushing travels to Ciudad Juarez, and asks how human life there came to be worth so much less than the drugs being trafficked through. Episode first aired June 13, 2011 2230 GMT on Al Jazeera English. http://english.aljazeera.net/programmes/faultlines/ Follow on Twitter: http://twitter.com/AJFaultLines Follow on Facebook: http://facebook.com/AJFaultLinesFollow on Tumblr: http://ajfaultlines.tumblr.com See all episodes of Fault Lines: http://www.youtube.com/show/faultlines?s=2010 Meet the Fault Lines staff: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?p=PL2A3A165068A8A650

Apr 11, 2012 - I haven't looked up recent statistics but thank you for sharing. I would also like to add that most of the crimes being committed are not all related to drug organizations. They all have different categories depending on various types of crime.

May 14, 2012 - This business never going to end because Mexico doesn't generate real incomes, beside tourism and everybody can see that in the country's media. It's a huge market where the cartels can make their money laundry in a fast, easy and protected by the same goverment.

May 22, 2012 - You would wipe your ass with 5 dollars an hour? Let's put that in perspective. $5 an hour is roughly $40 a day, or about $200 a week. Let's assume you take a modest shit once a day. That would mean that you would need to wipe your ass with $28 every time you took a shit. That's alot of money to take a shit. To put it another way, you could buy about 30 or more rolls of decent toilet paper with the money. You would effectively be using 30 rolls per shit! Weirdo...

May 23, 2012 - This is capitalism at its best... Americans making huge profits out of the NAFTA while poor people work 12 hours a day for 50 dollars a week. Way to go capitalism...

Chundinicool Says:

May 23, 2012 - USA please, for god's sake legalize the goddamn drugs and stop this bullshit once and for all... everybody knows that your people can't and will never stop doing drugs. Stop giving all that money and weapons to those psychopath drug cartels.

Mar 28, 2012 - WHERE are you getting your statistics? Handgun deaths, primarily suicides, numbered 17,352 in 2010. That's according to the Bureau of Statistics and is about right when you check an individual state, so how can you be off by more than 54,000 people? The problem is horrible enough and large enough without people blowing up the numbers!

liveinjoy11 Says:

Apr 2, 2012 - There has to be hope. Mexico's people deserve to have hope and the rest of the world owes it to them to help with this situation. We are all one, what happends to one can certainly happen to another.

jpoker27 Says:

Apr 11, 2012 - It is america's fault, We consume drugs, and in return naturally people in mexico cut the heads off of 5 yr old kids and soak them in acid. I want to get outta crappy US and go to mexico but I think mexico doesnt want our bad influence, they built a wall.
