Slash on albums might sound great because they have the ability to let him punch in on mistakes or edit using Pro Tools, which is common practice in pop related music. Now, if you listen to Slash live, he usually plays a lot sloppier than his studio recordings. He is also regurgitating older rock guitar players' cliche riffs and licks and the WAY he holds his guitar is copying on of many before him. Slash just has a difficult time soloing.
