Title: Mt Fuji From a Meadow Trail

Added: May 15, 2009

Author: softypapa

Duration: 1:13

Description:
Emily, Yumiko and I were treated to a splendid view of Mt. Fuji while enjoying a winter hike through the forest surrounding the flanks of the volcano. The mountain was largely hidden during our walk due to the dense woods, though when we entered this meadow we found the mountain looming very near with crisp details visible in the clear and cold winter air. Snow was seen billowing from the summit and clouds grew and dissipated quickly. Evening was drawing fast and though I did not catch it on tape we later enjoyed watching the dimming light growing red along the summit before darkness sent us home for warmth and food.

May 15, 2009 - SO adorable! Mmmm, I'm going to have to look up the size of Mt. Fugi in comparison to some of the US mountains, like maybe Pikes Peak.~Kat

May 15, 2009 - Mt. Fuji really is beautiful eh?

softypapa Says:

May 15, 2009 - Hi Kat, Your comment made me curious so I looked it up:Mt Fuji: 3,776 meters (12,385 feet)Pikes Peak: 4,301 meters(14,110 feet)I shot this video while hiking on a trail located on the actual flank of the mountain and this contributed to a sense of closeness and small size. However, as Fuji-san rises from sea level it can really loom large when viewed from a distance, and on clear days the mountain is an imposing sight which can literally fill the skyline. -Kurt :-)

May 15, 2009 - The day was indeed quite cold though not cold enough to prevent Emily from wearing her favorite outfit. -Kurt :-)

May 16, 2009 - Dude, I have a horrible Mt. Fuji story for you, but the thing is it won't fit in this tiny little box they're giving me. But suffice to say it involves the time when my dad, my brother and I summited the mountain after an all-night long climb on one August day (when I was twelve years old.) And that was almost 30 years ago! (I'm just a little bit younger than you.)There was a disaster on the mountain which killed and injured a dozen of climbers that day. Made a major headline in Japan...

May 16, 2009 - WOW that is really clear and close !Great footage. Thanks

softypapa Says:

May 16, 2009 - I am sorry that you had such an experience on Mt. Fuji. Was this perhaps the incident of the 707 airliner which was torn apart by wind shear while passing over the mountain. This incident was in the late 60's I believe which may have been earlier that the time frame you describe. -Kurt :-)

Jahar Says:

May 16, 2009 - That's just breathtaking. I can't even imagine being that close. You're very lucky!

TiramisuHappy Says:

May 16, 2009 - It didn't happen higher up on the mountain, but more towards the lower slopes when we were coming down from the top. Actually it happened MINUTES after we had completely reached the bottom. But even during our descent, we saw several loose rocks flying down right past us. The weather condition had been extremely dry and windy. Soon, it wasn't just small rocks, but massive boulders that weighed a ton or more. They struck a group of climbers, instantly killing some, critically injuring others.

softypapa Says:

May 16, 2009 - This was certainly a terrible event and I was previously unaware of the rockfall which was caused and the impact this had on climbers. I'm glad that your family was alright. Thank you for sharing about your experience.

May 16, 2009 - Great intro!!!

softypapa Says:

May 17, 2009 - Hi Dave, This intro has a curious story... Emily was playing on my computer while I was at work and I found this little clip recorded and saved on the disk when I came home. I had no idea she had made this and on a lark I simply added it as a video intro. After I told her how much I liked it Emily has since volunteered to make more intros. I can't wait to see what I find on my computer at the end of the workday. :-)

Jun 9, 2009 - very nice video!...I would love to be that close to Fuji-san someday!

softypapa Says:

Jun 9, 2009 - Hello gtluvr, I hope that you have a chance to visit Mt. Fuji as well. It's not hard to reach the mountain once you are in Japan as there are buses from nearby Fuji city which will take you up the side. There are also many guided tours which include the beautiful nearby lakes and waterfalls. -Kurt :-)
