Firstly, How is life in prision worse than the poor people in America like ME who work their asses off to make a living and yet we go WEEKS Without food or Healthcare because we cant afford it. Except when you mention that in the USA every recent execution has been way more expensive than it would have been to keep that prisoner until natural death. People shouldnt go hungry or without healthcare, and for REALLY developed nations that is the case.

And if you are cut off from society / the outside world, life loses its value and turns into a drag, because we are a social species.
