Nov 20, 2008 - When Otis started signing "I've been loving you", I fell OUT. Whoo! And the other musicians talking about hearing it for the first time...wow.And, I love Rufus--that man is a FREAK of the highest order (I mean that with love).Sidenote: PBS showed Wattstax a while ago--in the dead of the night. But, I was happy to run by it. Why does PBS show the best documentaries in the dead of night!

Jun 6, 2009 - There are many fine musicians, singers and songwriters out now. But I get the feeling the industry isn't allowing them to produce the kind of music they want or are capable of producing because of the almighty buck and the tone-deaf suits' love of mediocrity.

Jul 7, 2009 - Don't know if you're still searching for this, but the opening song is "Cause I Love You," by Carla & Rufus Thomas.

Oct 11, 2009 - what a great label stax was!

royalsteven Says:

Nov 30, 2009 - I think Motown had more and better artists overall but Stax had that rawness to it's sound and artists. Mainly because of Otis & Isaac. Motown was like the Beatles in their beginning period with tight suits and clean hair, Stax was like the later Beatles period with experiment, exciting feeling and wildness. Both great labels.

andan04 Says:

Jan 4, 2010 - @royalsteven I'd be more inclined to compare Motown to the Beatles -- great pop sensibility, carefully crafted image, and slick production -- whereas Stax was more like the Rolling Stones, performing with raw emotion over a wicked groove. I suppose it's a matter of preference, but I'll take Stax and the Stones every time. Motown had nothing on the likes of Otis, Sam & Dave, Ruby Johnson, Johnnie Taylor, Eddie Floyd, Mable John, and Booker T. & the MG's.

royalsteven Says:

Jan 5, 2010 - Yes me too. But I think I still choose Motown. They had Marvin, Supremes, Stevie, Curtis, Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Isley Brothers some of my fav soul artists. So I think Motown had the best artists, Stax had the better sound O.O

andan04 Says:

Jan 5, 2010 - @royalsteven No question, Motown had an amazing lineup. Compared to the soul of Stax, though, I'd generally (granting an occasional exception), categorize its sound as pop. I don't know if you've seen this full documentary, but in it Rufus Thomas describes the difference between the two perfectly. I think Stax made the more genuine music. But as you've said, both were great labels.
