Notable is that this cost less than $100 in materials so far and that the largest part of this turbine is recycled materials (the PVC drums previously held Balsamic Vinegar from Italy). Also, this turns well in a very light wind.Axle: 3 inch PVC piping from Home Depot Bearings: 5 inch lazy suzan from Lowes.Part 2 will cover power generation and connection to the battery bank.

Jan 24, 2012 - WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINEVisit: windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.comZERO-NOISE from gears and generators since they are sealed underground.SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS since slow-moving.DOES NOT OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE since the turbine can be very tall.MAY BE LOWER-COST since it may use timber and other cheaper things.ELUDES HURRICANE FORCE since the V-type folding blades automatically close.NO FIRE since well-cooled.HELPS WIND-ENERGY COMPANIES since it is FREE FOR ALL.

Feb 2, 2012 - turn it sideways and dip it in a stream. I think that you could cut the drums in strips for a conventional windmill. There is a youtube on making your own ball bearing to make bearings. You might look into that.

Feb 8, 2012 - How long in your experience do Lazy Susan bearing last in this application and environment? It seems that they are not designed for such forces or exposure.

Feb 23, 2012 - This is great. How do you connect, so it will power something? Thankyou.
bnewton81 Says:
Feb 25, 2012 - not if you get sealed ball bearings. The ones in this video will rust and be almost inoperable within a month.
OnlyHempFuture Says:
Mar 12, 2012 - Noisy
Zerkbern Says:
Mar 28, 2012 - Yes. Yes they will. These "lazy Susan" devices were never intended to be used outside. Also, they are only intended for intermittent use, as in spinning around a spice rack. Even if they never rusted, they will wear out in short order when subjected to 24/7 use.

Apr 1, 2012 - Build a magnetic bearing for this compressing 2 sets of north to north magnets together. That is all ;)
zaphodb777 Says:
Apr 16, 2012 - Dumb question, why didn't you use a pair of "one wire" (self regulated) 12V alternators for the top and bottom bearings?

Apr 19, 2012 - ok, so now lets put a load on this puppy and test its output....

May 5, 2012 - looks good but maybe too noisy for close to a house application.
DukeNukem65 Says:
May 25, 2012 - The bearings from the lazy susans would be a bit noisy, I would have to do something a bit more quiet.

Jan 20, 2012 - how long did it take before you raged and grabbed a axe and chopped it up in pieces? dont think I would last more than 5 mins listening to and looking at that thing lolThat plastic barrel construction sure amplifies the ball bearing sound a lot so cant see how you ever would want it mounted that close to the house, it would drive me totally insane lol
