Duration: 4:18
Description:
Lyrics:On Raglan Road of an autumn dayI saw her first and knewThat her dark hair would weave a snareThat I might one day rueI saw the danger and I passedAlong the enchanted wayAnd said let grief be a fallen leafAt the dawning of the dayOn Grafton Street in NovemberWe tripped lightly along the ledgeOf a deep ravine where can be seenThe worth of passion's pledgeThe Queen of Hearts still making tartsAnd I not making hayOh I loved too much and by such by suchIs happiness thrown awayI gave her gifts of the mindI gave her the secret signsKnown to the artists who have known The true gods of sound and stoneAnd word and tint I did not stintI gave her poems to sayWith her own name thereAnd her own dark hairLike clouds over fields of MayOn a quiet street where old ghosts meetI see her walking nowAway from me so hurriedly my reason must allowThat I had loved not as I shouldA creature made of clayWhen the angel woos the clayHe'll lose his wings at the dawn of day

Mar 26, 2012 - Yes I know you're describing the song in its context but I have never been able altho would like to find printed documentation about this relationship and especially any image there may be of the lady at the heart of it.
jbarischrooney Says:
Mar 28, 2012 - The lyrics are taken from a poet Patrick Kavanagh. My father studied this poem years ago for his leaving cert and he tells me the poem is about Kavangah falling in love with a street lady, a prostitute. He fell in love with her and they married." The Queen of Hearts still making tarts And I not making hay", this refers to Kavanagh not sleeping with her at the time, even while she does so with those that hire her.

Apr 10, 2012 - This is a love poem with a sad ending written by Patrick Kavanagh. Its about a man who came across a beautiful woman but she in all her beauty was untrustworthy and he for a while gave up on everything just to be with her. He should have been home looking after his farm but love got the best of him and he gave her everything he could including his heart but the Lady in the end had enough so she now shuns him which breaks his heart even more. Beautiful Poem / Song So well sung by Luke Kelly

May 6, 2012 - its a kavanaugh poem, that kavanagh once asked luke to sing, considering word was going around dublin, that luke was singing it to perfection. when luke was in a pub singing one day, he seen kavanaugh, and was afriad to look at it as kavanaugh had a very bad temper, and was known to beat up guys, and kavaugh walked up to him, and , the rest is history....

TheOnlyException16 Says:
May 9, 2012 - Not quite, the poem was originally published under the name 'Dark Haired Miriam Ran Away', Miriam being the name of Patick Kavanagh's (the poet's) brother's girlfriend but his brother said he only did this to avoid embarrassment. It was inspired by Hilda Moriarty, a 22 year old medical student, who Kavanagh fell madly in love with.
TheOnlyException16 Says:
May 9, 2012 - Sadly Hilda didn't feel the same way and had been trying to end the relationship but the unexpected death of Kavanagh's mother delayed the separation. By the time this poem of unrequited love was published she was in a new relationship and was married the following year. Kavanagh was left heart-broken and embittered. He kept a painting of Hilda in his flat and when he died she sent an 'H' shaped wreath of red roses.
