Title: Mass arrest attempted at 19th St. in Oakland #J28 (1080p)

Added: Jan 30, 2012

Author: ryanjarvinen

Duration: 8:5

Description:
The latest edit of this footage is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLUN1wDibPIThis video was recorded at 5:53:29pm on Jan 28, 20121. A march was stopped at Telegraph Ave and William St. (5:49:35)2. All park exists were closed (5:51:11)3. The crowed was not allowed an exit while gas / chemicals, projectiles, batons, and explosives were used on the public.Reporters and citizens experienced some extremely aggressive behavior:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df3udXma_0IHere are a few views of the situation from locals that were on the ground at 19th Street: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf6Rl8m-L7ghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE8OaI_DmU4409 people were later rounded up and arrested down the street at the YMCA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFGraaA7O8chttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skhd_fDrwCUI was not certain while filming, but gas was definitely used on this residential area. I definitely felt sick later as the gas reached my apartment.Protesters did not destroy any personal property. Buildings, windows and cars remained untouched (in this area at least).Live rounds were also left behind in the park, which is used by the OSA School as a playground / P.E. area: https://p.twimg.com/AkWj_oECMAAYmE5.jpgThis group began with activism that was inclusive enough to involve the local homeless community. The city's responses seem to be enflaming the situation, in order to make the marchers appear to be an agressive force. I have little doubt that the number of marchers will increase next time since they believe that they have protection under the constitution. The city seems to be circumventing due process and the presumption of innocence in order to prevent a potential break-in before it could take place. It's hard to see in the video, but this park is a monument to humanitarianism: http://www.remember-them.org/I apologize if my tone during the filming sounds like I'm amused. Not at all. I was quite nervous at the time, and this experience was extremely disturbing to watch. I really didn't know how to respond at the time. I was trying to remain positive and non-biased while pointing out what is going on in my neighborhood. As an Oakland resident, I take this extremely seriously.Unfortunately, politically motivated arrests are not uncommon in Oakland, and the City leadership assists in prioritizing the level and focus Police activity. It's hard to see some much government spending going to waste. Oakland has closed 7 schools in the past 2 years, 5 in the last year alone. Here are a few relevant follow-up articles:http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/02/11/MN091N5C9E.DTL&ao=allhttp://www.sfbg.com/politics/2012/01/31/occupy-oakland-inmates-santa-rita-attacked-developing-storyhttp://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/02/01/charges-dropped-against-many-occupy-protesters-arrested-in-oakland/http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/03/occupy-oakland-activists-_n_1253651.htmlI hope non-violence and peace will prevail. I don't think that adding more police will have a positive impact on the situation.Stay Safe Oakland!@ryanjNote: The brightness has been adjusted on this copy. Feb 2, 2012 - lurk more?

dbopps Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - Nice job and thank you ryan for your global service! Please pardon any inconvenience in your neighborhood while under peacefully intended reconstruction!

mrdude171 Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - This would imply that I've submitted unsolicited responses to any comments here, which is wrong.

mrdude171 Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - Yes, but fighting them through noble, not ignoble, means. I hold our government's violations of our rights to be inexcusable, but I suspect this video is largely be portrayed out of context. It would be the moral equivalent of showing a video of the remaining thousand of a lost battle being killed mercilessly at the hand of the victor, while not showing the violence of the vanquished during the battle.

jerm1089 Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - well if you seen the video earlier on in the day it shows the police firing rubber bullets and tear gas into the croud before they start throwing debris (bottles, rocks) back so ill state it once more lurk more

mrdude171 Says:

Feb 2, 2012 - Obviously this is confusing to you, so I'll clarify since you continue to make invalid points.1. I watched the video because I care enough about the situation to do so.2. If you're suggesting I'm lurking, you'd be wrong. My one comment was a rebuttal to the one-sided representation of the event as an unprovoked irrational oppressive response. All other comments were replies.3. If you're recommending I lurk to be more informed, it's unnecessary to make the point I've made (see #2).

JoKoKilla Says:

Feb 3, 2012 - That's exactly right, and don't forget the NDAA.

northstarinfo Says:

Feb 3, 2012 - Great footage. We should have people like you with radios/cell phones in contact with tactical teams on the ground so people can react in a coordinated way.

krammit25 Says:

Feb 3, 2012 - the more i watch this...the more pissed off i get

ryanjarvinen Says:

Feb 3, 2012 - updated, also added a link to 3 additional minutes of video covering the start of the kettle, and proving that there was never an option to peacefully leave the area.

lascuevasdemario Says:

Feb 4, 2012 - Ryan, do you have video of the order to disperse? You refer to it here, but I am a lawyer and need to get the exact language of the order, so I am looking for video or audio of the order. If you have it, could you post it, please?

eelcloud Says:

Feb 4, 2012 - it is audible in my video of the incident. I was inside trying to leave as soon as dispersal order was given and was prevented from leaving. Tear gas was then used on the contained crowd.

SongbirdRadio Says:

Feb 4, 2012 - Check out my video response directly after I got tear gassed here. Love, Larken

meowcatcool Says:

Feb 7, 2012 - Love the commentary.

whitiangaratonastick Says:

Feb 9, 2012 - You Yanks make me laugh....LAND OF THE FREE??? Is that a joke???

docguch Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - Entrapment. When asked to disburse, disburse. This looks like entrapment. DC MPD and Park Service police got sued for a similar situation. Expect a law suit for entrapment and false arrest.

docguch Says:

Feb 11, 2012 - Must allow people to disburse.

StupidRepublican Says:

Feb 12, 2012 - free country.. HA!

StupidRepublican Says:

Feb 12, 2012 - i wish someone would just gun down those cops. shoot them all. why are you people putting up with this? why dont you do something?

ryanjarvinen Says:

Feb 12, 2012 - don't troll here. These folks are peaceful and plan to remain that way. If people respond with violence, then the city has a legitimate reason to lock them up.

StrEEtwYZe0194 Says:

Feb 13, 2012 - Being peaceful has it's ups and downs. I don't suggest starting violence but I highly recommend not getting fucked over.

SugarBare28 Says:

Feb 16, 2012 - I do not support the destruction of property, but when you back people into a corner while using tear gas and flash bangs and other projectiles you cannot expect them to not run for a way out.

AlienBeliever897 Says:

Mar 16, 2012 - Why are all the police here mindless drones??

studentshadow1 Says:

Mar 31, 2012 - i would have climbed over the fence and legged it out of there lol

tehallanaz Says:

May 21, 2012 - no fuck the police
